UW Karate Club Claims 16 Medals at Colorado Invitational

Medalist -- Myles Blask earned a silver medal at the recent Colorado Springs Traditional Karate Invitational Tournament.

The University of Wyoming Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Club claimed 16 medals at the recent Colorado Springs Traditional Karate Invitational Tournament.

Nine members of the UW club placed in kata (forms), kobudo (weapons) or kumite (sparring) at the Dec. 13 event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs.

Head instructor Ben Froidevaux and Eddie Yaracz (Drums, Pa.) each won three medals to lead UW. Froidevaux won gold in advanced kata and male (+18) kobudo and bronze in advanced kumite; Yaracz won gold in male beginner kata, silver in male (+18) kobudo and bronze in beginner kumite.

The other UW medalists were:

-- Shawn Burlew (Elbert, Colo.) picked up bronze medals in male (18-34) advanced kata and kumite.

-- Clark Newbold (Minden, Neb.) won gold in male (18-34) kata and silver in male (18-34) intermediate kumite.

-- "Viva" Yan Ma (Laramie) earned bronze medals in female (18-34) advanced kata and female (+18) kobudo.

-- Myles Blask (Elbert, Colo.) won a silver medal in male (18-34) advanced kumite.

-- Ben Corley (Laramie) won bronze in male (+18) kobudo.

-- Jessica Ricks (Laramie) claimed silver in female (18-34) kata.

-- Zhuxian Zhou (Laramie) won silver in male (18-34) kata.
