For the third time in five years, University of Wyoming policy debaters won the prestigious
Val Browning Round Robin, hosted by Weber State University.
Wyoming seniors Sam Allen of Meridian, Idaho, and Jamie Cheek of Newcastle defeated
teams from Columbia University, Cal State Fullerton, Denver University, Gonzaga University,
Idaho State University and Whitman College to finish in first place in the round robin-style
competition, where every invited team debates against every other invited team.
"Allen and Cheek not only out-debated their opponents, judges also scored the Wyoming
duo higher in individual speaking style," says UW Director of Debate Matt Stannard.
"Allen received the Top Speaker award, and Cheek was close behind as the tournament's
second best speaker."
In 2005, UW's Chris Crowe and Brian DeLong won the Weber State Round Robin. In 2007,
the UW duo of Travis Cram and Will Jensen won it, and Stannard received the Coach
of the Year award.
