University of Wyoming Professor of Music Michael Griffith has been elected president of the Conductors Guild, the international professional organization of conductors.

Griffith was elected to a two-year term at the guild's New York conference in January. During his term conferences will be held in Copenhagen and San Francisco, and workshops are scheduled at the University of Maryland, Bard College, and at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, Calif.

A guild member since the early 1980s, Griffith has been a board member since 2000 and has served as vice president, secretary and president-elect. Griffith has been published in the Journal of the Conductors Guild and has frequently been a presenter in the New Music Project at guild conferences. He is in his 20th year as a professor of music at UW and as UW Symphony Orchestra conductor.

With close to 2,000 members worldwide, the guild sponsors workshops and an annual conference, publishes a journal, a newsletter and a job listing, hosts a listserve, offers mentoring from established conductors and occasionally takes an advocacy role on matters of concern to the profession.
