Fifteen high school students from the Northwest College GEAR UP Wyoming program participated in the University of Wyoming's recent Discovery Day.
GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, helps prepare 7th-12th grade income-eligible students for college.
Discovery Day, coordinated by the UW Admissions Office, introduces prospective students to the university. The day's activities included a resource fair, presentations about UW's academic programs, lunch in the Washakie Dining Center, residence hall tours and a UW men's basketball game.
A scavenger hunt, organized by GEAR UP alumni who are now UW students, helped the students learn about the organizations, programs and resources at UW. They interacted with individuals at the resource fair to fulfill their missions and to learn more about UW.
The following students attended Discovery Day at UW: Daniel Delgado and Jessica Stricker from Basin's Riverside High School; Michael Getzfried, Brian Garza, and Chris and Rudy Hernandez from Burlington High School; Brianna Cude, Andy Neff and Carina Orozco from Cody High School; Dalton Harris, Katie and Kassey Macdonald and Cody Pease from Powell High School; Kelsey Brosious from Powell's Shoshone Learning Center; and Brittany Kocher from Worland High School.
GEAR UP Wyoming is funded 50 percent through an annual $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education with an additional $3.5 million provided by in-kind and scholarship contributions from Wyoming's community colleges, UW and the Wyoming Department of Education.
UW Admissions hosts Discovery Day three times a year. For more information, call the Visitor Center at (307) 766-4075 or visit the UW Web site at www.uwyo.edu/admissions.
