The College Transition Begins: Summer Orientation

May 6, 2009

By Noah Buckley
This is an exciting time of year for high school seniors - prom, graduation ceremonies, and the feeling of fulfillment that comes with the completion of four years of pop quizzes, extra-curricular activities and standardized tests.

It's an especially stressful yet thrilling time for those graduates who are moving on to college in the fall. Admissions applications, financial aid forms and scholarship applications have been submitted and the all-important decision on where to spend the next two or four years taking pop quizzes, exams and participating in extra-curricular activities looms. Colleges, on the other hand, are busy trying to confirm who will attend in the fall and prepare for those students at their orientation programs.

If you plan to attend the University of Wyoming, it's time to take that next important step. We invite you to register for our new student orientation session this June.

Earlier this year, we sent out information on orientation and housing opportunities. UW new student orientation, called Basecamp, is your opportunity to register for fall classes, meet with an advisor in your academic program, get your student identification, learn more about the resources available to you at UW, meet other enrolling students and get to know both Laramie and the campus.

We also invite parents of new freshmen to attend our orientation programming. Parents their orientation in sessions tailored specifically for them, learning about campus safety, financial aid, university policies, student health and an overview of UW's parent program called Cowboy Parents.

Special one-day orientation programs are available for transfer students as well.

Many colleges and universities require students to confirm their attendance by May 1. While UW doesn't require that, we want you to be prepared for the fall semester and get the class selection you want. Some orientation sessions are already full, so we ask you to register soon to secure a spot. Registration and further details on new student orientation can be found at www.uwyo.edu/orientation or by calling the UW Admissions Office at 1-800-342-5996.

New freshmen and transfers still looking for a college to call home may still apply for fall enrollment at UW, but we encourage you to do so as soon as possible at www.uwyo.edu/apply. If you can't attend courses on the Laramie campus, then consider courses through UW's Outreach School. Check out Outreach options at www.uwyo.edu/outreach.

Summer is a beautiful season in Laramie and we invite you to get to know Laramie and our campus. At UW, you'll be able to acquire the skills you need to prepare you for success.
