Campus Construction Update for Week of June 14

These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of June14-20:

9th Street Closure -- The City of Laramie has started a major reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Avenue to Lewis Street. This portion of 9th Street will be closed through Aug. 14.

The construction includes installation of a new water line, storm sewer, curb and gutter improvements and a total rebuild and overlay of the existing road surface. The contractor, Simon Contracting, has designated two pedestrian crossing areas (University and Clark streets), but overall access in the area is severely limited. UW also will replace sidewalks on the east side of the project area. See map.

Traffic Alert: A 20 mph speed limit is now in effect on 9th, Lewis, Ivinson and 15th streets surrounding the campus.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- Finish work continues in the original building. Metal framing and utility installation has begun in the basement of the addition. Miscellaneous steel work continues on the upper three levels. Concrete will be placed for the flooring system on the third level.

ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion: Sept. 2009) -- Work continues on the interior of the lower two levels of the 70s and 50s area of the library. Painting is being done on the ground level of the 70s and utility rough-ins are occurring on the basement level of the 70s. Asbestos abatement has been completed in the basement of the 50s addition and has started on the ground level. At the exterior, landscaping continues near the east entrance to the Wyoming Union.

Student Health/Cheney International Center -- A punch list walk through has been scheduled for Monday, June 15. Exterior and interior items are being finalized and balancing of mechanical systems is taking place in the next two weeks. A move for the international programs is scheduled for June 25 and 26.

Berry Center -- Arrangements are being made with the cty and Haselden construction for the street closure at 10th and Lewis. A firm date has not been set

WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute buildings east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm will continue to be moved on weekday evenings and on weekends as weather permits in preparation for Berry Center construction. There will be intermittent closures of the service entrance on Lewis Street, lasting approximately 15 minutes each, as the remaining buildings are loaded on a trailer and removed. Please use extreme caution when using the service entrance on Lewis Street.

War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through August 24. Drilled piers and excavation is ongoing. Pre-cast panel work is ongoing this week.

Information Technology Center -- Exterior work on the building and landscaping will proceed depending on the weather. Stone pavers and other work is on the west side.

College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- Activities include: Continue landscaping stone work, continue audio/visual installation, carpet touch up, AV/IT completion, and continue pre-clean and punch. The HVAC commissioning will continue.

UW Police Facility -- The Police Department has moved into the new facility. Punch list items will be ongoing the next month.

Lewis Street Apartment Removal -- Apartments at 1111, 1113, and 1115 E. Lewis Street are prepared for removal by the contractor. The buildings will be lifted and placed on beams beginning June 16. A date will be provided when the buildings are loaded and are ready to be moved from the site. Please use caution on Lewis between 11th and 12th Streets.

Agriculture C (Scheduled Completion: June 2009) -- The north restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor will be available.

Animal Science (Scheduled Completion: June 2009) -- The west restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. East restrooms will be available.

Corbett Building (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- Restrooms will be created in the main lobby.

General Classroom Renovations Phase 2 (Scheduled completion: Aug. 21) -- Classrooms to be renovated this summer include, Bioscience 217, 218, 219, 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112, 3114. Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building. HVAC and electrical work is ongoing.

Fine Arts (Scheduled Completion: July 2006) -- A new family restroom will be created near Room 226. Construction will not occur during scheduled classes.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

Concrete and Asphalt -- Work associated with this project will occur at the east parking lot of McIntyre Hall and on the east side of Knight Hall. The project will continue most of the summer on various areas of the campus.

Fuel Facility -- The landscaping portion of this project has been delayed due to rain but should be completed in the next week or so, weather permitting.

9th Street from Lewis Street to Grand Avenue -- Construction continues. Access to the Speech and Hearing Clinic will be maintained via Clark Street. Additional signage has been posted at 8th and Clark streets to direct people to the parking lot on the west side of the Health Sciences Building.

Campus -- Signing of mechanical room doors will occur over the next couple of weeks. It is an OSHA requirement to identify and label areas that may contain asbestos. Contained and undisturbed asbestos is not a hazard. The signs are designed to advise maintenance staff to exercise caution when working in the area.

Gibbon Street -- Drainage work will occur on Gibbon Street between 15th and 17th streets in front of Shipping and Receiving as weather permits. Please be cautious of heavy equipment in the area.

Knight Hall -- An ADA ramp will be constructed at the east entrance to the building. The east entrance will be closed throughout the construction. Please use the south or north entrances to the building. The west lane of 13th Street from Ivinson north will be closed for approximately one month. Traffic will be re-routed between Knight and Ross Halls.

Ross Hall -- Electricians will be replacing lights on the first floor next week and removing lights in the east wing of the basement. Please use caution in these areas.

WTBC -- Grounds Services will be planting trees east of WTBC next week. There should be no effect on traffic or access.

19th Street -- Installation of new lights along 19th Street between Harney and Willett has resumed. Please watch for trucks and equipment in the area.

Fine Arts -- Re-roofing part of the building continues. The staging area is on the southwest side of the building. The southwest entry will be closed throughout the project. Please use another entrance. Work will continue throughout June due to rain delays.

Biological Sciences -- Construction of new walls in the building continues in the northwest stairwell. Work has been completed in the southwest and southeast stairwells. The northwest stairwell will remain closed while the work proceeds. Please use the elevator or another stairwell during construction. In case of an emergency the stairway will not be locked at any time during construction.

Physical Sciences -- No construction will occur next week on the stairwells in Physical Sciences.

Engineering -- Painting will occur over the couple of weeks on the 6th floor. Painting has been completed on the fifth floor.
