Campus Construction Update for Week of July 12-18
July 10, 2009 — These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of July 12-18:
Lewis and 10th/11th Street Closure -- Staging areas will begin to
be set-up beginning in July for the Cowboy Dorm and Old Power Plant
deconstruction. Portions of Lewis Street will be closed from 10th
through 11th throughout the project's duration. Parking for the Speech
& Hearing Clinic will be temporarily relocated to the southeast
corner of the 10th and Lewis parking lot while construction occurs on
9th Street. The clinic parking can be accessed via 15th and Lewis. Head
one-way west to the parking lot. Leave the parking lot headed north
through the alley to Bradley Street.
9th Street Closure -- The City of Laramie has started a major
reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Avenue to Lewis Street. This
portion of 9th Street will be closed through Aug. 14. The construction
includes installation of a new water line, storm sewer, curb and gutter
improvements and a total rebuild and overlay of the existing road
surface. The contractor, Simon Contracting, has designated two
pedestrian crossing areas (University and Clark streets), but overall
access in the area is severely limited. UW also will replace sidewalks
on the east side of the project area.
The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:
College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- Masonry
will begin on the south and west sides of the addition. Utility
rough-ins and wall framing will continue in the basement. Utility
rough-ins will begin on the ground level and fire proofing will start on
the second level. Duct work for the main vertical runs will be position
early in the week. At the addition, finish work will continue.
ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion: Sept. 2009) -- Flooring
protection has gone down for the furniture move, to begin Monday.
Delivery truck traffic will be high during this process. The audio
visual contractor will be pulling cables and the electrician will be
cutting in boxes as necessary. AV equipment deliveries will begin and
be placed in the building where necessary. The electrical rough-in will
be completed and inspected Monday and the rest of the week will be
hanging, taping and finishing the drywall in the basement. The
electrical contractor will begin pulling cable for the BACnet system.
Ceiling tile will be removed and reinstalled where necessary.
Landscaping work will continue at the east entrance to the Union. In the
grassy area along 13th street and Ivinson, the water main for the
sprinkler system will be installed. At the interior, finish work
continues on the ground level of the 70s addition. Demolition work is
underway in the 50s portion of the building. Re-roofing at the History
Building will begin.
Student Health/Cheney International Center -- Work on the project
is almost complete. Programs are in the process of moving in. Furniture
arrives in the next two months. Exterior landscape is being installed.
Berry Center -- 100 percent of the documents are being completed.
Construction will begin after deconstruction of the remaining WRI
storage units and the Cowboy Dorm.
WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute buildings
east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm will
continue to be moved on weekday evenings and on weekends as weather
permits in preparation for Berry Center construction. There will be
intermittent closures of the service entrance on Lewis Street, lasting
approximately 15 minutes each, as the remaining buildings are loaded on a
trailer and removed. Please use extreme caution when using the service
entrance on Lewis Street.
War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled Completion: Fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through Aug. 24. Steel erection this week. Repairs on lower steel stands ongoing.
Information Technology Center -- Scratched glass will be
replaced, and repair work on the freight elevator might take place.
Tenant finish work may start in the basement. Some plant material will
be replaced and stone pavers completed.
College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- In the process of finishing up punch list items and completing job.
UW Police Facility -- The Police Department has moved into the new facility. Punch list items will be ongoing the next month.
Lewis Street Apartment Removal -- Apartments at 1111, 1113, and
1115 E. Lewis Street are prepared for removal by the contractor. The
buildings will be lifted and placed on beams beginning this week. A date
will be provided when the buildings are loaded and are ready to be
moved from the site. Please use caution on Lewis between 11th and 12th
Streets.
Biosciences Building (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- The first floor restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor are available.
Physical Sciences Building (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- The first floor restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor are available.
Ross Hall (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- The first floor
restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms near the
elevators and on the second floor are available.
Animal Science (Scheduled Completion: June 2009) -- The west restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. East restrooms are available.
Corbett Building (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- Restrooms will be created near the main lobby.
Centennial Complex -- Exterior block repair is ongoing. Staging for the contractor is on the northeast side of the building.
General Classroom Renovations Phase 2 (Scheduled completion: Aug. 21) --
Classrooms to be renovated this summer include Bioscience 217, 218,
219, 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112, 3114.
Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building.
HVAC and electrical work is ongoing. Painting is scheduled in
Engineering Building this week.
Fine Arts Center (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- A new family restroom will be created near Room 226. Construction will not occur during scheduled classes.
The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities scheduled for the week:
Concrete and Asphalt -- The McIntyre Hall parking lot has
reopened. The sidewalk south of Knight Hall also has reopened. The
sidewalk west of the UW Foundation House has been replaced. Stamped
concrete sections will be replaced on the north side of Prexy's Pasture.
All areas are open to traffic. Concrete work continues in the area of
the Western Research Institute, Health Sciences and the Classroom
Building. Pedestrian access will be maintained from Earth Sciences to
Aven Nelson. Vehicular access has been re-routed to the east entrance
off Willett Drive and the south entrance to Prexy's Pasture. Sections of
sidewalk will be replaced north and east of Old Main this week.
15th and Ivinson Streets -- Work at the eastside of this
intersection will begin. The east lane on the northbound side of the
road will be closed for about 10 days while curb and gutter work is
completed. Access to King Street will be maintained, but narrowed during
construction. Please use extreme caution in this congested area. Work
will move to the westside of the intersection following completion of
the eastside intersection. Construction will continue throughout July.
Health Sciences -- Extensive concrete work is occurring in the area
east of Health Sciences and west of Physical Sciences. The service
entrance to core campus off Lewis Street will be closed for two weeks
while work progresses. Vehicular access to Prexy's will be limited to
the south and east entrances during this time.
Parking Lot Striping -- Monday: CEP, Animal Science, RMMC;
Tuesday: WTBC, Fine Arts Center; Wednesday: North of Ag C, handicap
parking areas; Thursday: Corbett West, Arena-Auditorium East, Service
Building.
Fraternity and Sorority Mall -- Excavation will start on the west end of the mall to repair a steam line. Access should not be impacted.
McIntyre Hall -- Excavation and demolition will occur on the
southeast corner of the building to facilitate an upgrade to the air
handling system in the basement. Work will continue into mid-August.
Wyoming Union -- Foundation repairs at the southeast corner of
the alley have been completed. Light pole bases are being installed and
concrete will be poured as work progresses on the project. Please use
caution.
Fine Arts Center -- Steam has been shut off to the building to
replace a defective heating coil. There will be no hot water in the
building until the coil is replaced. A coil is on order and should be
received in 3-4 weeks. Roof replacement is complete.
University Stock Farms -- Physical Plant is constructing a building to house a boiler for the feed mill. Work should continue until the end of the month.
Engineering -- Floor tile will be installed in the basement of
the main stairway and the area is open. Painting will continue on the
sixth floor as time permits.
Half Acre Gym -- New divider curtains will be installed in the
second-floor gym beginning July 13. The gym will be closed July 13-18.
The track will remain open.
Half Acre Swimming Pool -- The pool will be closed from June 27-Aug.
17 to upgrade the main drains, install a depth marker, replace tiles
and clean and paint the pool.
Arts and Sciences -- Work continues in the first-floor restrooms to complete ADA upgrades. Painting should occur this week.
Health Sciences -- ADA work will occur in the unisex restrooms near Rooms 161 and 182 this week.
Knight Hall -- An ADA ramp is being constructed at the east
entrance to the building. The east entrance will be closed throughout
the construction. Please use the south or north entrances to the
building. The west lane of 13th Street from Ivinson north will be closed
for approximately one month. Traffic will be re-routed between Knight
and Ross Halls.
Ross Hall -- Re-roofing of the building is in progress. The
staging area will be moved from the west stairwell to the east stairwell
around July 15. Material movement will occur from 5-7 a.m. between Ross
and Knight halls. Please use caution.
19th Street -- Installation of new lights along 19th Street
between Harney Street and Willett Drive continues. Please watch for
trucks and equipment in the area.
