Kunkel Leads Transit and Parking Department
Paul Kunkel, the new manager of UW's Transit and Parking Department, accepts the challenges of taking the position during a dynamic period for parking and transportation at the University of Wyoming.
Kunkel manages the department's operations, financial and personnel functions for about 65 employees ranging from bus drivers to parking enforcement staff members. While UW TransPark has significantly increased its transit services to improve mobility, increase ridership and reduce parking demand on and adjacent to campus, he says the department has not raised permit fees since 2002 for students, and 2003 for faculty and staff.
"The current parking permit prices are insufficient to sustain the existing system and do not generate revenues to meet future parking and transportation needs," he says. "To maintain the necessary safety and improvements to the current parking and transit system, fees had to be adjusted accordingly."
The new fee schedule can be found at www.uwyo.edu/tap. Permits that are purchased now will be sent to faculty and staff beginning in early August. The new transit passes will be available online starting Monday, July 27. Information about the 2009-10 parking and transit options is being sent to all faculty and staff members.
Kunkel has worked at UW for seven years, including five years as assistant manager of TransPark. He holds a B.S. in management information systems (2002) from UW and has received much training and numerous certifications in the field. He held management positions at Startek between 1998 and 2002 and worked as a driver for the Albany County School District from 2000-2002.
