Campus Construction Update for Week of Aug. 23

These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of Aug. 23-29.

9th Street Is Open -- The City of Laramie has  completed a major reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Avenue to Lewis Street this summer. The construction involved installation of a new water line, storm sewer, curb and gutter improvements and a total rebuild and overlay of the existing road surface. UW also replaced sidewalks on the east side of the project area.

Lewis and 10th/11th Street Closure -- Lewis Street is closed between 10th and 11th Streets to be used as the staging areas for the Cowboy Dorm ( log building west of Earth Sciences Building) and Old Power Plant deconstruction.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- Work at the addition continues with masonry and window installation on the exterior facade. At the interior, drywall has started in the basement and utility rough-ins is under way on the upper levels. Work on the sky light continues. At the original building, the start up of the mechanical units is in progress. Tile and toilet room floors are on-going.

ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion: Sept. 2009) -- Exterior work will continue on the landscaping east of the Union along the Union parking area. The west side of the library within the construction fencing will be used as a staging area for the work on the west side of the building. At the interior, utility rough-ins and metal framing will continue in the original part of the building.

Student Health/Cheney International Center -- Work on the project is almost complete. Furniture arrives in the next two months. At Cheney Plaza, workers are replacing paved stones that were damaged by vehicle traffic.

Berry Center -- The contractor will continue mobilization activities. The deconstruction work will begin with the removal of remaining trees and shrubs. There will also be trenching and saw cutting of concrete and pavement.

WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute buildings east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm are being moved to prepare for Berry Center construction. There will continue to be intermittent closures of the service entrance off of Lewis Street and the service entrance will be blocked for sufficient periods Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23. Please use extreme caution when using the service entrance on Lewis Street.

War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled Completion: Fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through Aug. 24. Steel erection will continue this week and repairs on lower steel stands ongoing.

Information Technology Center -- No work is schedule unless additional parts for the AV equipment arrive.

College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- Work is complete on the main project, landscaping work continues.

UW Police Facility -- The Police Department has moved into the new facility. Punch list items will be complete in the next few weeks.

Lewis Street Apartment Removal -- The apartment at 1115 E. Lewis Street is being prepared for removal and will be removed mid-late next week. Announcements regarding temporary no parking on Lewis Street between 11th and 12th Streets and 11th Street between Lewis Street and Bradley Streets will be provided as soon as the removal date and time is determined. Please use caution on Lewis between 11th and 12th Streets.

Monopole -- Work on the cell tower north of Green Hill Cemetery will start Monday, Aug. 24.

Ross Hall (Scheduled Completion: Aug. 24) -- The first floor restrooms are being modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms near the elevators and on the second floor are available. Crews will be working nights and early morning.

Centennial Complex -- Exterior block repair is complete. Block cleaning, sealing and caulking is tentatively scheduled for early September. Staging for the contractor is on the northeast side of the building.

General Classroom Renovations Phase 2 (Scheduled completion: Aug. 21) -- Classrooms being renovated this summer include Bioscience 217, 218, 219, 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112, 3114. Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building. Punch list items and additional white board installation remaining.

The UW Physical Plant has scheduled the following activities scheduled for the week:

Steam Shutdown -- The campus steam system annual work has been completed, and the steam system is now operational.

Fine Arts Center -- The new coil has arrived and is being installed. Hot water in the building should be restored by Monday.

Washakie Dining Center -- The temporary steam boiler has been removed.

Concrete and Asphalt -- Sidewalk replacement west of Half Acre and the Wyoming Union, concrete replacement at Physical Sciences (northeast side), and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) modifications on the west side of Aven Nelson should all be completed early next week.

Several areas north of the Corbett Building are blocked for ADA work and sidewalk replacement. The north entrance to Corbett is closed. Please enter on one of the other three sides. This work and several light replacements will continue through next week. ADA modifications at the west entry to Fine Arts will complete next week. The entrance will remain open, with barricades placed around work areas. The sidewalk south of Wyoming hall has been poured and will be open today or Monday.

Concrete work will begin next week at the Cooper House and continue for two weeks. The south drive and entry will be blocked at Animal Science today to facilitate concrete replacement. Please use the west and east entrances. Handicap accessibility is available west of the main entrance on the south side of the building. The loop drive northwest of the Arena is closed for concrete replacement. Construction will continue through the end of the month. Miscellaneous grinding to smooth uneven concrete on sidewalks across campus will continue through September. Please avoid work areas.

Geology Building -- Reconstruction of the parking lot east of the Geology Building should complete later next week. Access to the north of Geology will be rerouted to the north entrance of the Earth Sciences Building, then through the building to the connection between Geology and Earth Sciences. Access to the west side of the Engineering Building and the east side of Geology will remain open and unchanged.

Health Sciences Building -- Pedestrian access only has been restored to the east side of the building. Temporary pedestrian access to the south entrance will be maintained. Landscaping and installation of handrails continues. Work has started at the west entrance and will continue for about one week. The west parking area will be closed during this construction. Alternate handicap parking is available east of the Geology Building and north of Lewis, next to the TransPark Building. Exterior light replacement east and west of the building continues.

Knight Hall -- An ADA ramp has been constructed at the east entrance to the building. The east entrance will be open in about one week after handrails are installed. Please use the south or north entrances to the building.

Wyoming Union -- Concrete work on the south side of the Union is complete, and the area is open to access.

Classroom Building -- Masonry work to repair the planter on the south east corner of the building is complete.

Physical Sciences Building -- Masonry work to repair the planter on the northwest corner of the building will be completed in about one week. Work areas will be barricaded.

McIntyre Hall -- Masonry work continues on the southeast corner for a few more days.

Parking Lot Striping -- Striping has been completed for the season.

Campus Greenhouse -- Materials have arrived for this project. Steam system replacement work will begin next week. Sidewalk accessibility on the north side of Willett could be interrupted intermittently. Please avoid the work area.

Engineering Building -- The thresholds have been reset at the east entrance. Access has returned to normal.

War Memorial Fieldhouse -- Roof replacement continues on the south side of the building. The staging area is on the west side of the building. Please use caution when entering from the south and around the staging area.

Ross Hall -- Re-roofing of the building will continue for about two more weeks. The staging area is on the north end of the east stairwell. Material movement will occur between 5-7 a.m. in between Ross and Knight Halls. Please use caution around the building area.

Animal Sciences/Molecular Biology Building -- Painting in the Meat Laboratory will continue through next week.
