Popular recording artists the New York Voices will perform concerts Thursday and Friday,
Oct. 1 and 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences
auditorium.
Tickets cost $7 for the public and $5 for students and senior citizens. For tickets,
call (307) 766-6666 or visit www.uwyo.edu/finearts/. Tickets are also available at the Fine Arts box office and Wyoming Union information
desk.
Thursday's performance is with the UW Vocal Jazz Ensemble, the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble,
UW's premiere big band; and the Denver-based Jeff Jenkins Jazz Trio. Friday's show
is with Jenkins Jazz Trio only.
"We don't usually have the opportunity to perform and work with groups of that caliber,"
says Vocal Jazz Director Nicole Lamartine, assistant professor in the UW Department
of Music, about Thursday's concert. "I'm hoping that the students are able to look
through a window into what the professional singing world is like."
Formed in 1989, the New York Voices group has received rave reviews and international
recognition. It has released six studio albums and helped contribute educationally
by providing workshops and clinics to high school and college music students.
"New York Voices lives up to its reputation as the most exciting vocal ensemble in
current jazz," the Boston Herald stated in a review. "To collect such quality voices
in one group is rare enough, yet the real trick of New York Voices is how well they
mesh."
The UW Vocal Jazz Ensemble comprises nine singers that perform standard and contemporary
jazz repertoire. Students learn the history of jazz as an American art form.
