UW Hockey Club Opens Season With Two Wins

October 5, 2009

The University of Wyoming club hockey team opened the 2009-10 season with a two-game sweep against Montana State University last weekend.

The Cowboys defeated the Hellcats 5-1 at Spirit Hall Ice Arena in Gillette and 3-1 at the Casper Ice Arena, relying on a versatile offensive attack and stellar goalkeeping in both games.

In Friday's season opener, Willy Miller (Arvada, Colo.) netted a pair of goals and Seth Farrell (Longmont, Colo.) had two assists as UW rebounded from a 1-0 deficit. Robert Kola (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stopped 25 shots to earn the win between the pipes.

Elliott Bauder (Douglas), Craig Luplow (Banner) and Mitch Nelson (Sheridan) also scored goals for the Cowboys. Jake Bates and Luke Walker (Jackson), Erik Blomberg (Parker, Colo.) and Lucas Wescoat (Idaho Falls, Idaho) added assists.

In the teams' Saturday game, Dustin Galbreath (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Levi Wood (Cheyenne), a pair of newcomers to the club, each had a goal and an assist, and Kenny Ainsworth (Casper) made 21 saves to earn the victory in goal.

Blomberg supplied the Cowboys' other goal, and Nelson and Walker contributed assists.

UW plays its annual alumni game at 8 p.m. Friday at the Laramie Community Ice Arena, then resumes its season with a 7:30 p.m. faceoff Saturday at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
