Musical Theatre Students Perform Broadway Hit

November 4, 2009 — The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance continues the 2009-2010 production season with "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," the Broadway musical-comedy celebrating the mania of competition.

UW theatre faculty member Patrick Newell directs the show, which runs Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the UW College of Education auditorium. Tickets, $10 for the public and $5 for students, will be available at the door. The show contains some adult language and situations.

"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" follows six misfits as they compete for the chance to go to the National Spelling Bee Finals in Washington, D.C.

"The characters are so organic, and they go through the sort of young, life problems that everyone can identify with," says Newell. "The script is hilarious and the tunes are the kind you hum after you leave the theatre."

This performance is an outgrowth of Newell's "Musical Theatre Workshop" in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

"This is a new course designed to address the vacuum left by the elimination of Centennial Singers," says Newell. "As we establish a new bachelor's degree concentration in musical theatre, we need a performance outlet for students interested in the degree."
