State Department Selects Two UW Students to Study in Russia

June 4, 2010

University of Wyoming students Tyler Neasloney of Cheyenne and Jerod Smith of Meeker, Colo., have been selected for U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships to study in Russia this summer.

They will spend seven to 10 weeks studying at intensive language institutes and experiencing Russian culture. Neasloney will study at the Kora Language Center in Vladimir and Smith will study at the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities in Kazan. They are among 575 students from nearly 5,300 applicants selected to receive the merit-based scholarship.

The Department of State's Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) for Intensive Summer Institutes was launched in 2006 to increase opportunities for American students to study critical-need languages overseas. It is part of a wider U.S. government effort to dramatically expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical-need languages.
