UW Trustees Accept Bids for Downey Hall Abatement and Renovation

July 9, 2010 — The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees today (Friday) approved awarding two bids for asbestos abatement and renovation of Downey Hall.

Successful bidder on the asbestos abatement is Risk Removal of Fort Collins, Colo., with a bid of $605,730. The university's Environmental Health and Safety Office maintains a comprehensive asbestos safety program to ensure that campus buildings and facilities meet all applicable safety standards.

The successful bidder on the renovation project is Haselden Wyoming Constructors Inc., with a total bid of $4,191,300. The renovation of Downey Hall, an eight-story, 203-room residence hall, will provide life safety and infrastructure improvements. Renovations are expected to be complete by fall 2011.

The Downey Hall renovation follows renovations of McIntyre (2003) and Orr (2004) halls. The projects require one residence hall at a time to be taken out of service. It is now Downey's turn for life safety system upgrades and quality enhancements, including a fire alarm system throughout the building, electrical system upgrades, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant restrooms and sleeping rooms and other improvements. In addition, operable windows will be replaced with fixed windows and ventilators.

The 2010 Wyoming State Legislature approved the university's request to issue bonds for the Downey Hall project and a new visual arts facility.
