Clothing, Household Items Needed for UW International Students
August 17, 2010 — Residents have an opportunity to clean out garages and closets and help University of Wyoming international students at the same time.
International Students and Scholars (ISS) will offer a household item giveaway Aug. 20-21 for newly arriving UW international students. Individuals can help in two different ways, says Maria Almendares, ISS office associate.
People can donate unopened travel-sized toiletries such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc. for students who have arrived and have not yet had a chance to purchase the items, Almendares says.
"These kinds of items are not allowed in carry-on luggage and are often not brought by the new students," she says. Donated items can be dropped off at ISS in the Cheney International Center, Suite 5, or the UW Department of English in Hoyt Hall, no later than 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20.
Household items and clothing also can be donated. Donations can be taken to the old UW apartments office building, located at 2413 Arrowhead Lane, apartment number 369, between 7:15-7:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Distribution of items begins at 8 a.m.
"Winter clothes such as sweaters, boots, coats, hats and gloves are especially appreciated, as well as household items and toys, but please refrain from donating personal clothing items such as lingerie," Almendares says.
Individuals cannot make the giveaway time Saturday but would like to donate items can call Michelle Black in the UW apartments office at (307) 766-6613.
"If you have a pickup truck and would be willing to help students haul furniture or larger items to their home, feel free to attend the giveaway that morning," Almendares says.
