A retirement reception for Merrie McElreath, executive business manager for the UW College of Arts and Sciences, is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, in the A&S lobby.
She and her husband Mike, who recently retired from Outreach Technology Services, moved to Laramie in June 1987, arriving with three kids, Rachelle, Justin and Bree, and two large golden retrievers. Coming from Portland, Ore., to the Rocky Mountains was quite a shock for the whole family. They planned to stay in Laramie for two years. Mike and Merrie are still here but will soon move on.
In October 1987, Merrie was hired as an administrative secretary with Institutional Support Services (ISS) located in Old Main. Two years later ISS merged with Information Technology, and Merrie was hired as an accounting associate for the College of Arts and Sciences in December 1989.
The position expanded through the years, and Merrie was promoted to executive business manager. Because of that change, she realized that academics were her "niche." She was active in implementing People Soft Financial System and taught classes in the process.
"What a great time I have had in this position," says McElreath. "I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the finest individuals whom I have ever known. The A&S Dean's Office is absolutely the best. Some of us have been with Dean Walter for 20 years; we have gone through parents' deaths, children's marriages, births of grandchildren, and divorces.
"I truly will miss all the staff of A&S, and all others who have played such an important part of my life. I'll think of all of you with the fondest of memories."
