Background Reviews Now Required for UW Hires
To promote a safe workplace and academic environment, all new benefited University of Wyoming hires will be subject to background reviews before they are hired.
Additionally, background reviews may be required for employees hired into non-benefited positions based on specific criteria and as determined by the Human Resources Office.
"The University of Wyoming is committed to providing a safe and productive learning and living community," says Nancy Olson, manager of employment. "Background reviews ensure a job candidate's experience is consistent with the needs of the university."
Olson says background checking is intended to support verifying of credentials, criminal history, credit status and other information related to the employment hiring process. Employers may be held liable for the actions of an employee who commits crimes or policy violations while on the job, especially if the employee has a previous record that the university failed to investigate (known as negligent hiring.)
Current employees who are changing jobs will undergo a background review if the job requires a higher level of responsibility. Former employees (including retrenched employees) who are applying for positions within UW will also have a background review.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of the background check, Olson says.
All benefited job opportunity advertisements now have a disclaimer that states: "The University of Wyoming is dedicated to ensuring a safe and secure environment for our faculty, staff, students and visitors. To achieve that goal, we conduct background investigations on prospective employees."
