More than 225 geoscience students from across the country are registered for the ninth annual Rocky Mountain Rendezvous of Geosciences Oct. 8-11 at the University of Wyoming.
Hosted by UW's Department of Geology and Geophysics, the RMR is the second largest among five regional job fairs sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. This year 17 companies will recruit students at RMR.
High-tech firms, such as petroleum companies, strongly support the job fair, says Randi Martinen, UW faculty member and RMR chairman.
"Companies invest significant resources into training new hires and therefore want to make sure they have the right person for the job," she says. "Also, because of a national shortage of geoscience students, from the students' perspective, it is no longer about finding a job, it is about finding their ideal job."
Participating companies support a number of activities in addition to formal interviews, including field trips, short courses, resume and interviewing workshops, technical poster presentations, receptions and dinners. These activities allow students and recruiters to spend informal, but quality time together outside of a formal interviewing setting.
Several companies, including Chevron, Anadarko, Marathon and Exxonmobile, provide extra support for such things as awards, field trips and short courses, Martinsen says.
