University of Wyoming Participating in National Make-A-Difference Day

October 15, 2010

Volunteers will collect canned goods to benefit Albany County families Saturday, Oct. 23.

It marks the 20th anniversary of Make-A-Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. University of Wyoming Service, Leadership, & Community Engagement Office (SLCE) volunteers will race to collect canned goods in the Laramie community. Volunteers will meet in the Wyoming Union Family Room at 1 p.m.

Volunteers will visit houses between Gibbon and Sheridan streets and between 5th and 15th streets. Community members who will not be home can leave canned goods in their door or on their front porch. Community members can donate nonperishable food items as well as baby formula and diapers.

All proceeds will benefit Laramie Interfaith-Good Samaritan food bank.

"Interfaith informed us that this is their most difficult of time year to gather food -- many groups organize food drives at the beginning of the semester and during the holidays, but the store of food gets severely depleted between the two," says Kristen Owen, SLCE's Americorps worker. "Since Interfaith is the only emergency outlet for Albany County families living in poverty, they are in constant need of more supplies."

Volunteers are encouraged to wear creative Halloween attire. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume and the most food collected at the end of the race. Lunch will be provided.
