UW Selected for Tillman Military Scholars University Partnership

November 17, 2010

The University of Wyoming is among five colleges nationwide selected for the Pat Tillman Military Scholars University Partnership, which supports active and veteran service members and their families.

Recipient schools are selected for the partnership based on their dedication to the nation's service members.

"The Tillman Foundation's university partners demonstrate leadership in military support services to student veterans, active service members and their families," Dolores Cardona, UW associate dean of students, says. "Most importantly, it enables us to have a pool of UW veteran students in this prestigious scholarship program."

Tillman Military Scholarships cover not only direct study-related expenses such as tuition and fees, but also other areas, such as housing and child care. Scholarships are allocated to individual applicants through both the Pat Tillman Foundation and select university partners with existing support programs and enrollment.

The Tillman scholars program is in memory of former Arizona Cardinals defensive back Pat Tillman. In 2002, Tillman put his NFL career on hold to serve his country. Following Tillman's death in 2004, while serving with the 75th Army Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan, his family and friends established the Pat Tillman Foundation that invests in veterans and their families through education, community and advocacy.

"We hope to have Tillman Military Scholars at UW whose scholarships will fill the financial gaps in the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill funding," says Cardona. "The Tillman Foundation recognizes that veterans still have financial needs even with improved G.I. Bill funding. UW veteran students will have additional opportunities as Tillman Military Scholars."
