UW’s Cowboy Battalion Prepares for Annual Bronze Boot Run

November 15, 2010 — Sixty-six University of Wyoming ROTC cadets will participate Friday, Nov. 19, in the annual Bronze Boot Run.

The run is part of the activities leading up to the annual UW/Colorado State University football game, also known as the Border War. This year's game is at noon Saturday, Nov. 20, at War Memorial Stadium.

Each year leading up to the rivalry matchup, the game ball is carried in a running shuttle relay by the ROTC detachment of the visiting team along U.S. Highway 287 to the Wyoming-Colorado state border. Once the ball is at the border, the home team's ROTC detachment receives the ball and runs it to the stadium hosting the game. The entire run is approximately 65 miles; the UW portion is about 30 miles.

The UW portion of the run begins at 1 p.m. at the state line on Highway 287, where they will meet their CSU counterparts who will begin their leg of the run earlier that morning in Fort Collins. A ceremony that includes the bronze boot is planned at the exchange site. The game ball will be given to UW's ROTC detachment and both head football coaches are expected to be at the border ceremony along with the schools' ROTC representatives.

UW Army ROTC cadets will run with the game ball in pairs from the border to War Memorial Stadium where they will arrive at approximately 2:30 p.m. The UW cadets will run in one mile intervals, with the first leg taken by UW mascot Pistol Pete, who is Gregory Burke, a UW ROTC cadet from Cheyenne. UW's ROTC members will give the game ball to UW Coach Dave Christensen at 5:15 p.m. in the Rochelle Athletics Center.
