UW Trustees Approve Personnel Appointments

University of Wyoming trustees approved the following personnel appointments during their business meeting Friday, Jan. 21.

Administrative Appointment:

Academic Affairs

Andrew C. Hansen as associate provost. Hansen received his B.S. (1980) in civil engineering from Montana State University, an M.S. (1982) in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. (1985) in mechanical engineering from Montana State University. Hansen joined the UW faculty in 1986. Hansen has served as academic coordinator for the School of Energy Resources, associate dean for Graduate Program and Research for the College of Engineering and Applied Science and most recently as department head in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Faculty Appointments:

College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

Valtcho Jeliazkov as associate professor in the Department of Plant Sciences. Jeliazkov received his M.S. (1983) and Ph.D. (1988) in agronomy from the Higher Institute of Agriculture in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and a second Ph.D. (2001) in plant and soil sciences from the University of Massachusetts. He has been a research professor at Mississippi State since 2005.

Brant A. Schumaker as instructor in the Department of Veterinary Sciences. Schumaker received a B.S. (2001) in biological sciences, M.S. in preventive veterinary medicine (2006), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (2005) and Ph.D. in epidemiology (2010) from the University of California Davis. He previously taught in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of California-Davis.

College of Arts and Sciences

Matthew D. Carling, as assistant professor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology. Carling received his B.S. (1997) in biology from the University of Michigan, M.S. (2002) in zoology from the University of Idaho and Ph.D. (2008) in biology from Louisiana State University. Previously, he was a postdoctoral associate in the Fuller Evolutionary Biology Program at Cornell University's Laboratory of Ornithology.

Academic Professional Appointments:

College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

Augustine Obour, as assistant research scientist in the Department of Plant Sciences. Obour received his B.S. (2002) in crop science from Kwame Nkrumah University in Ghana, and an M.S. (2007) in agronomy and a Ph.D. (2010) in soil and water sciences from the University of Florida. He is based at the UW James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture and Research Center (SAREC) in Lingle.

Craig Cook, as research scientist in the Department of Renewable Resources. Cook received his B.S. (1978) in biology and chemistry from the University of Utah. He has served as the laboratory manager in the University of Utah Stable Isotope Ration Facility for Environmental Research since 1985.

College of Arts and Sciences

John Patrick Harty as assistant lecturer in the Department of Geography. Harty received his B.S. (1995) in earth sciences and an M.S. (2000) in geography from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. (2007) in geography from Kansas State University. Harty has been a visiting professor in the UW Department of Geography since 2008.

Elizabeth A. Flaherty as assistant lecturer in the Department of Zoology and Physiology. Flaherty received her B.S. (2000) in wildlife and fisheries biology and management from UW, M.N.S. (2002) in biology from Southeast Missouri State University and Ph.D. (2008) in zoology and physiology from UW. She has been a UW postdoctoral research associate since 2009.

Trustees also approved the retirement of Associate Provost Rollin Abernethy.
