UW Women Second, Cowboys Fourth at EWC Rodeo
The University of Wyoming women could not make up much ground in the overall standings despite a second-place finish at last weekend's Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) rodeo in Torrington.
The Cowgirls scored 250 points at the weekend rodeo hosted by Eastern Wyoming College to finish 30 points behind defending champion Gillette College. The UW women still trail the second-place Pronghorns by 835 points in the overall standings. Only the top two teams in the region advance to the summer College National Finals Rodeo in Casper. Central Wyoming College leads the region and Chadron (Neb.) State College is third.
UW's Clayton Van Aken was the all-around cowboy at EWC, but it wasn't enough to propel the Cowboys to the overall team title. Casper College continued its rise to an unexpected regional title by taking first in Torrington. Gillette College was second, followed by the host Lancers and then the Cowboys.
Gillette College is the overall CRMR team leader, but holds just a slim 90-point lead over Casper College.
Buffalo, S.D., sophomore Kaycee Nelson turned in UW's top performance for the women's team, winning the breakaway roping competition. She had the best time in the opening round and was second in the short go to take the average.
The team's final 80 points came from Wheatland senior Dana Weiser who had the top opening-round time in barrel racing. She slipped in the short go to wind up fifth in the average.
Two other UW Cowgirls also placed, but their points did not count in the overall team's production. They were not among the four women selected before the rodeo as the designated team members. Laci Harper, Fort Collins, junior, and Kelsey Smith, Rapid City, S.D., senior, went fifth and sixth, respectively, in goat tying.
Van Aken, a Descanso, Calif., freshman, and partner Kade Merritt, Eaton, Colo., sophomore, continued their season-long consistency in team roping. The UW duo split the opening round and finished second in the short go to take the average. The pair is now just 45 points out of first place in the region's team roping competition.
Van Aken, who also leads the all-around competition, scored the Cowboys' final 100 team points, splitting third in tie down roping.
Non-team member Riley Millward, Jackson junior, was fifth in the tie down average.
UW's teams will be at the Colorado State University rodeo in Fort Collins this weekend.
