UW Seeks Honorary Degree Nominations

September 19, 2011

Nominations for 2012 University of Wyoming honorary degrees are due to the President's Office by Oct. 21.

UW alumni, current or former trustees and faculty all are eligible to submit written nominations for awards to be presented at spring commencement. Submissions are referred to a joint committee of trustees and faculty.

"An honorary degree from the University of Wyoming recognizes individuals who reflect the university's highest ideals and values and exemplify the concepts of excellence, service, and integrity," says UW President Tom Buchanan. "These degrees recognize distinguished accomplishments in the professions, sciences, arts, humanities, public service and service to humanity."

Nominations should address at least one of the following criteria: notable contribution to the health, education or general welfare of Wyoming citizens; outstanding accomplishment by alumni, either on a state or national level; or accomplishment so outstanding that it has received recognition on a national or international level.

Nomination packets should include a letter of nomination that includes a full description of the contributions of the nominee, including a list of public recognitions and other awards and honors; a one- or two-paragraph summary describing the nominee's salient contributions (see the website www.uwyo.edu/honorarydegree  for an example); and two additional letters of support.

Nominees who receive votes from two-thirds of the joint committee are recommended to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

Send submissions to: UW President Tom Buchanan, Department 3434, 1000 E. University Ave., Laramie, WY 82071; or send fax to (307) 766-4126 or e-mail to reichert@uwyo.edu.
