Campus Construction Update for Week of Oct. 16

These are among the construction activities scheduled Oct. 16-22 at the University of Wyoming.

Notice: The alley between the Bureau of Mines Building and the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center will be closed Friday, Oct. 21, for the installation of traffic control gate arms at the Lewis Street entry to the alley. Associated work on the project begins Friday, Oct. 14.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Wyoming Union Restroom Renovation (Scheduled completion: Mid December) -- Remodel of restrooms on the first and second floor next to the west entrance, and creation of a storage closet across from the Information Desk. Demolition work is complete on first and second floors. Demolition for new mechanical ductwork on third floor will begin Monday. Contractor vehicles and equipment will be parked around the perimeter of the south wing to remove construction debris. Proceed with caution around these areas. New walls for the first and second floor restrooms are in place and mechanical/electrical rough-in is under way. The storage closet is complete except for door installation.

State Fiscal Stabilization Fund Modernization, Renovation and Repairs (Scheduled completion, this fall) -- The project focuses on major maintenance items, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements and classroom improvements. Buildings involved are as follows: Animal Science, Arts & Sciences, Hoyt Hall and Engineering Building: Work on punch list items. Health Sciences, Pharmacy wing: Punch list items, commissioning mechanical system. Physical Sciences Building: Punch list items.

Visual Arts Center (22nd St. and Willett Drive near the Centennial Complex, scheduled completion is late fall 2011) -- Be aware that there will be construction traffic throughout the construction period. Foot and vehicular traffic will not be permitted across the site. Work is continuing on site and drive modifications along the west parking lot. Work to replace of curb cut and sidewalk will take place on 22nd Street. Landscape walls are complete. Final site grading, irrigation, planting and site concrete are progressing. Watch for minor work outside the contained construction area. Finishing of interior drywall, ceilings, floors and installation of mechanical/electrical systems is ongoing on the first and second floors. Painting and trim out is under way on the first and second floor west. Roof trim out and fascia is nearing completion.

Energy Resources Center (1020 Lewis St., former site of the old power plant) -- The west end of the ramp behind the Engineering Building will be closed. Handicapped parking will be relocated to the corner of Lewis and 10th with access through the Berry Center. Parking will be limited in areas around construction including the drive along the west side of Engineering. The access from main campus along the west side of Engineering to Lewis Street will be closed along the construction area for completion of foundations and utilities.

Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center Landscaping /Bureau of Mines Alley Improvements (Scheduled completion Oct. 28.) -- Only emergency vehicle traffic will be allowed in the alley between the Berry Center and the Bureau of Mines Building; pedestrians and bicycles must use alternate routes as concrete work in the alley along with contractor vehicles have created hazardous conditions. Proceed with caution in this area. New landscaping, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) walking paths, outdoor benches, lighting and a traffic gate are being installed by the alley. Topsoil and ground cover in landscaped areas is complete and final planting in area north of Pharmacy building will be installed next year. Painting of metal enclosure gates will begin this week.

Ivinson Building Abatement/Deconstruction -- Deconstruction will continue through the end of October. Bricks will be available to the public and are located on the west side of the fencing along 10th Street. Interested parties needing more bricks will need to talk with the contractor first. To do this stop by the construction site on the west side of the building and wave one of the workers down from outside the fence. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE FENCED AREA. The deconstruction contractor has extended the fencing around the Ivinson Building, which encompasses 33 total parking spaces to the south.

Student Apartments -- The contractor has set up fencing around the three-block area south of Willett between Crane and Soule. Site utilities are nearly complete. Apartment building concrete footings and foundations are 85 percent complete. Wall framing continues. There will be a total of 15 apartment buildings (332 beds) and a commons/maintenance building.

ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Company will not be on campus this week.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week:

Notice: The Physical Plant Plumbing Shop continues to blow out irrigation sprinkler systems. Work will continue throughout October. Overspray could create slick spots on sidewalks and other areas. Please use caution.

Pride Flags -- Installation of UW Pride flags will continue during the week. Please watch for moving vehicles.

Fine Arts -- The parking lot north of Fine Arts will be partially blocked for testing of the well and pump.

South Shuttle Lot (15th and Spring Creek) -- Phase two of the construction on the north part of the lot is nearing completion. Barricades will remain in place until all work is complete. The bus pickup and drop off area is by the bus shelter.

East Shuttle Lot (30th and Willett) -- Bus shelters will be relocated and expanded beginning Monday. Construction areas will be barricaded. Please watch for heavy equipment.

Engineering Building -- Mural installation throughout the building will continue this week. Please use caution in these areas.

Animal Science -- Painting in the hallways continues. Please use caution around work areas.

Biological Sciences Building -- Floor tile replacement is on hold until the end of October due to material delays.

Wyoming State Vet Lab -- The new parking area south of the Vet Lab is open. This project is complete.

Campus -- Water flow testing of fire protection systems is complete.
