UW Hockey Club Splits Two Games

The University of Wyoming hockey club split a pair of home games last weekend, losing to Colorado State University (CSU) and beating the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).

After surrendering 55 shots in a 7-2 setback to the Border War rival Rams, the Cowboys rebounded with a 6-4 win over the Mountain Lions to improve to 6-14 with four games remaining in the 2011-12 season.

Ethan Crockett (Cheyenne), Kyle Earley (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Ian Gonnella (Jackson), Willy Miller (Arvada, Colo.), T.J. Peters (Jackson) and Tyler Young (Douglas) scored goals for UW against UCCS. Jake Bates (Jackson) added three assists and Ben Steele (Los Angeles, Calif.) stopped 30 shots to earn the victory in goal.

Jim Fried (Kirkwood, Mo.), Patrick Ramsey (Houston, Texas) and Ben Squires (Centennial, Colo.) also had assists for the Cowboys.

Against CSU, Gonnella had a goal and an assist to front UW. Mitch Nelson (Sheridan) scored the Cowboys' other goal, and Miller and Peters had assists.

UW plays a pair of games at the University of New Mexico this weekend.
