Jon Nakamatsu Special Piano Event at UW

February 21, 2012

World-renowned concert pianist Jon Nakamatsu will join the University of Wyoming's Summit Chamber Players at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the UW Fine Arts concert hall.

He also will give a piano master class at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. Admission is free for both events.

The UW Department of Music and Fine Arts Outreach present a bonus addition to the Eminent Artist performance series. The program will feature Antonin Dvorak's charming "Terzetto op. 74 in C" and Johannes Brahms' monumental "Piano Quintet op. 34 in f."

His unassuming musicianship and eclectic repertoire have made Nakamatsu a popular favorite throughout the world, both on the concert circuit and in the recording studio, says John Fadial, UW associate professor of violin.

Nakamatsu launched to international fame after winning a gold medal at the 1997 Van Cliburn Piano Competition.

"Jon Nakamatsu plays with the calm assurance that comes of having both a solid technique and a gentle, introspective, interpretive spirit," wrote New York Times reviewer Allan Kozinn.

He has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Paris, London and Milan. Additionally, Nakamatsu will return to New York's Lincoln Center and other cities as part of a nationwide concert series.
