UW’s Allen Accepts ACE Appointment

February 6, 2012

University of Wyoming Provost Myron Allen has been selected as a member of the American Council on Education (ACE) Advisory Commission on Leadership.

The commission advises ACE on new programs for cultivating leaders in higher education.  The commission's 17 chief executive officers and chief academic officers, selected from institutions across the U.S., share insights and personal experiences in leadership development and institutional effectiveness.

Commission members were selected based on the desire to represent the full range of ACE membership; involve member presidents new to the organization; and appoint representatives with specialized knowledge or interest, says Gretchen M. Bataille, ACE senior vice president for leadership and lifelong learning.

"ACE is grateful to the presidents and senior leaders who have agreed to serve on this advisory commission," says Bataille. "We know that they will bring great insight into how ACE can best tackle the challenges facing American higher education today."

Allen joined the UW Department of Mathematics faculty in 1983 and became head of the department in 1992, serving until 1998. In January 1999, he was appointed associate vice president for academic affairs and, in 2005, he was named vice president for academic affairs, serving as the university's chief academic officer. His responsibilities include the university's academic budget, academic planning, curriculum, outreach mission, and academic personnel decisions that include hiring, reappointment, tenure and promotion.

He earned bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physics from Dartmouth College (1976), and a master's (1978) and doctoral (1983) degree in applied mathematics from Princeton University.

His honors at UW include an Extraordinary Merit in Teaching Award, an Excellence in Advising Award, and the George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award for teaching effectiveness, distinction in scholarly work, and distinguished service to the university and state.
