Campus Construction Update for Aug. 19

These are among the construction activities scheduled Aug. 19-25 at the University of Wyoming.

More parking spaces -- The new north half of the Ivinson parking lot is now open, adding 55 new parking spaces including ADA (Americans with Disability Act) spaces. Access will be from both 10th and 11th streets. Light poles are installed. Landscaping is 50 percent complete. Still expect heavy truck traffic on 10th and 11th streets for work on the southern two parking areas. The project will add 67 additional parking spaces to the existing parking lot.

Steam back on -- Steam will come back online Monday, Aug. 20. The temporary boiler piping and fencing will be dismantled Aug. 21. The temporary boiler will be removed Aug 22. Please use caution around equipment in the area of Washakie Center.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Landscape Projects -- Construction work continues toward late September completion on Sullivan Plaza, Public Edge Practice Field, Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker and Bureau of Mines landscape.

Sullivan Plaza -- Access to the south entrances of the Education Building and surrounding pedestrian pathways will continue to be prohibited through Aug. 24. Plaza pedestrian landscaping and hardscaping (work on pavement, sidewalks, flagstone and other surfaces subject to foot or vehicular travel) and reconstruction of the front entry stairs is ongoing, with landscaping and construction of the amphitheater and site amenities to follow. Pedestrian access to the south entrances of the Education Building and surrounding pedestrian pathways will reopen Aug. 27 with some temporary limitations imposed to accommodate continuing construction. Project staging area in the parking area north of Wyoming Hall will be removed prior to Aug. 24.

Public Edge Practice Field (Tailgate Park) -- Work is substantially complete. Remaining minor and accessory work may continue through Sept. 28.

Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker -- Adjacent portions of Ninth Street and Grand Avenue pedestrian sidewalks may be temporarily closed by construction through Sept. 28. Earthwork and entry marker construction continues, with landscaping to follow.

Bureau of Mines Landscape -- The vehicular access and pedestrian corridor between the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center and the Health Sciences Center may be restricted by construction through Aug. 24. General landscaping work is under way. Vehicular access and pedestrian corridor will reopen Aug. 27 with some temporary limitations imposed to accommodate continuing construction.

Counselor Education Training Clinic (Education Building, scheduled completion Oct. 22) -- Renovation construction work in the northeast portion of the basement of the Education Building continues. Construction staging will continue to prohibit access via the northeast building entry and to a portion of the parking area northeast of the Education Building through Aug. 24. Limited access via the northeast building entry will be reopened Aug. 27, although construction activities and staging will continue requiring appropriate caution to be exercised in the area.

Energy Innovation Center (formerly ERC, at 1020 Lewis St., scheduled completion October 2012) -- Access to main campus will be between or through Earth Sciences and the Berry Center. Lewis Street will remain closed during construction. Parking will be limited in areas around construction, including the drive along the west side of Engineering. The access from main campus, along the west side of Engineering to Lewis Street, will be closed during this phase of construction. The west end of the ramp, behind the Engineering Building, will be closed. Handicapped parking has been relocated to the northwest corner of Lewis and 10th streets, with access through the Berry Center or Earth Sciences Building to main campus.

Interior spaces are being finished throughout. Door and hardware installation is under way. Installation of lab equipment and casework is nearing completion on the first and second floors. Work continues on the south retaining walls to prepare for landscaping. Concrete paving/curb and gutter on the south will continue this week. Interior painting is under way with preparation for floor finish. Minor utility work will be ongoing. Expect congestion from delivery trucks, and take extreme care when walking around trucks waiting in the street.

Berry Center Green Roof Reconstruction -- Installation of the new roof membrane will be completed Aug. 17. Replacement of the planting soils will begin Monday, Aug. 20. Access to the south entry and the east sidewalk will be restricted during this process. Transplanting of the existing plants will begin Aug. 27.

UW Office Annex (21st Street and Garfield, scheduled completion Sept. 30) -- The project involves partial renovation of the lower level of the west wing for improvements to offices and other adjacent multi-use spaces. Demolition is completed, and interior wall framing is under way. Remodeling is under way in the conference rooms and adjacent spaces. These rooms will be closed until the end of September.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- Construction has started with site preparation and foundation systems. Structural steel frame is under way, and interior concrete stair towers are completed.

Student Apartments Bison Run Village (Scheduled completion this month) -- Apartments are now being occupied by students, with the community center open Mondays through Fridays. The new apartments are in the three-block area south of Willett Drive, between Crane and Landmark Village. Residence Life and Dining Services maintenance staff members are located in the community center's maintenance area. All of the apartment buildings are now complete, with a few punch-list items remaining. There are a total of 15 apartment buildings (332 beds) with the community center and maintenance building.

White Hall Renovations -- Renovation and abatement work is ongoing. Abatement is proceeding from top floors to bottom floors, and is 90 percent complete. Electrical and renovation demolition continues on the fifth through 10th floors, with new installations beginning on the 11th and 12th floors. The west parking lot will be closed until summer 2013. Underground electrical excavation is complete in front of Washakie.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week. Please direct questions to the service desk, 766-6225.

Corbett P.E. Building -- The pool is closed for annual maintenance through Sept. 10.

Fire Extinguishers -- The Physical Plant has successfully completed its first year of bar coding more than 3,000 fire extinguishers on campus. If you are aware of a fire extinguisher that does not have a bar code or yellow Trident Electric tag, email the building and room number to rsisnero@uwyo.edu so the equipment can be entered into the system.

Campus -- All crosswalks are scheduled to be painted this week. Areas will be marked with cones. Please use caution around striping equipment.

Concrete Repairs -- Work is scheduled at the north entrance of the College of Business and east side of Fieldhouse North.

Beta House -- Renovations to the first and second floors are under way. Completion of the project is scheduled for October.

Berry Center -- Work continues on the east garden plaza roof. Use caution in the area.

Foundation House -- The fan is operational and the exhaust louver has been installed. Additional materials are on order to complete the project. Use caution when the attic scuttle is in use.

Aven Nelson Building -- Gutter repair and roof paver replacement is scheduled for later in the week. Project staging will occur in the parking lot west of the building. A lift will be required to hoist new materials onto the roof. The west building entrance and sidewalk will not be accessible during lift operations (approximately two hours). Please use caution in this area.

McWhinnie Hall -- Removal and replacement of a domestic water heater in the basement mechanical room is scheduled through Aug. 21. There will be no hot water for the duration of the work.

Asphalt Repairs -- Crews will replace damaged asphalt in the following areas: Wyoming Union parking lot, the driving lanes between Coe Library and Knight Hall (13th Street north of Ivinson Street) and the driving lane between Wyoming Hall and McWhinnie Hall. Please be aware of heavy equipment in these areas.

Fine Arts (Crane Dance Studio) -- Due to flooding, the dance studio is closed until further notice. Resurfacing of the floor is scheduled through Aug. 24. Please use caution around equipment in this area.

Prexy’s Pasture, Geology and Engineering -- Excavation work has begun at the northwest corner of Prexy’s Pasture and will continue through Aug 24. Please use caution around equipment in the area.

Rochelle Athletic Center -- Construction is under way on the hydrotherapy pool room renovation in the football locker room. Demolition of interior partitions is scheduled for the week. The staging area will be at the southeast corner of the building. Access to the area will be limited to authorized personnel.

Multipurpose Gym -- Crews will begin preparing the building for painting. Work is scheduled to be complete by the end of August. Please use caution around equipment in the area.

Campus -- New sod is scheduled to be placed at various locations around campus. Sprinklers will apply additional water to ensure successful transplant of new turf.

Knight Hall -- Painting in the Registrar’s Office will continue through next week. Installation of new steam valves in the basement mechanical room is scheduled through Aug 24. Lighting replacement is ongoing in second-floor offices. Electricians will coordinate schedules with building occupants. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. The work is funded, in part, by energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power. Please use caution around work areas.

Central Energy Plant -- The fenced construction area will remain through Aug. 23. The sidewalk adjacent to 19th Street remains closed to pedestrian traffic. Please use the sidewalk on the east side of 19th Street.

Prexy’s Pasture -- Exterior lights may be off around Prexy’s Pasture due to construction of the Sullivan Plaza in front of the Education Building and an underground bore in the area of Cheney Plaza.

Jacoby Golf Course -- Construction continues on the east campus drainage project at Jacoby Golf Course. Inlet work will continue and traffic on Grays Gable will be routed accordingly. Installation of sod at Pond #1 will necessitate the frequent application of additional water. Excavation of Pond #4 has begun. Signs are posted at the affected holes and in the clubhouse. Affected holes will be off limits during construction hours (7 a.m.-5 p.m.) for the remainder of the construction period. Please use caution in the work areas.

Sigma Chi -- Installation of a fire suppression system is under way. Construction activities are occurring from the building south to the driving lane of Fraternity Row. Please use caution around equipment and materials in the area.

College of Law Building -- Lighting replacements are ongoing in the Law Library. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. The work is funded, in part, by energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power. Please use caution around the work area.

Biological Sciences Basement -- This renovation project is complete.

Biological/Physical Science -- Work is complete on the ceiling unit ventilators in hallways and various interior rooms.
