ALS Informational Meeting Monday

September 13, 2012

Information about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) will be presented Monday, Sept. 17, from 4-5:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences Complex.

“The incidence of ALS appears to be particularly high in Laramie and among UW personnel,” says Joseph Steiner, dean of the UW College of Health Sciences. “ALS is a disease of the nervous system, but the underlying cause is unknown. The ALS Association is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to sponsor the National ALS Registry in the hope of collecting data on the disease.”

ALS causes nerve cells to stop working and die, Steiner says. This leads to muscle weakness, paralysis and, eventually, death.

The National ALS Registry collects, manages and analyzes data about people with ALS. It is important to include as many people with the disease as possible to get the most accurate information.

To attend Monday’s session, RSVP by Friday, Sept. 14, to: advocacy@alsa-national.org. For more information, call 1-877-444-2572.
