Prominent Philosopher to Speak at UW Thursday

September 17, 2012 — A world-renowned philosopher is scheduled to visit and speak at the University of Wyoming this week.

Tyler Burge, professor of philosophy at the University of California-Los Angeles, will deliver a public lecture, “Perception: Origins of Mind,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Wyoming Union East Ballroom. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the lecture.

Burge also is scheduled to participate in a number of humanities classes and meet with students and faculty during his visit to UW.

Burge’s visit is part of Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program.

He is the author of articles in philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, epistemology, philosophy of language and logic, and history of philosophy. His most recent book is “Origins of Objectivity,” and he has published two volumes of essays.

A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has given lectures around the world, including Oxford, Columbia and in Paris.

Other sponsors of Burge’s visit are UW’s Department of Philosophy, the College of Arts and Sciences, the American Studies Program, the Religious Studies Program and the American Heritage Center.
