Pacifica String Quartet, a world-renowned chamber ensemble, will perform at UW Sept. 21.

The Pacifica String Quartet will open the University of Wyoming’s Cultural Programs series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the UW Fine Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $17 for students and senior citizens and $20 for the public.

Recognized for its exuberant performance style, and often-daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. They tour extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, performing regularly in the world’s major concert halls.

“We are happy to bring back the Pacifica, winners of an Avery Fisher Career Grant award and Musical America’s 2009 Ensemble of the Year, the same year it won a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance,” says UW Cultural Programs Director Cedric Reverand. He says London’s Gramophone magazine put the Pacifica on its cover and called it “one of the five quartets you should know about.”

This year's series will include five concerts in the fall and six more in the spring, which will culminate with an April 9 performance by violinist Rae Chen. Season tickets cost $200 for the public or $170 for students and senior citizens. A pick-any-five package is $110 for the public or $95 for seniors and students.

The Cultural Programs series features a variety of world-renowned performers. The 2012-2013 Cultural Programs' fall concert series also will feature pianist Gabriela Martinez (Oct. 6); the classically trained ensemble Time for 3 (Oct. 26); jazz artists the Ebene String Quartet (Nov. 11); and a holiday performance by surprise guests (Nov. 30).

The spring performers are the River North Dance Company (Jan. 31); jazz pianist Eldar Djangerov (Feb. 8); NOTA a cappella group (Feb. 22); pianist Stephen Hough (Feb. 28); the Aquila theatre performance of “Cyrano de Bergerac” (March 7); and violinist Chen’s performance (April 9).
