The music most identified with the times of year, Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” will be performed Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Fine Arts concert hall.

UW Symphony season ticket holders will get their tickets free; all others should call (307) 766-6666 for tickets, or visit the box offices in the Fine Arts Center or the Wyoming Union. Tickets cost $10 for the public, $6 for students and $7 for senior citizens.

“The Four Seasons” is a set of four violin concertos from the early 1700s, each composed to represent one of the seasons.

“We’ll hear the drama of a summer thunderstorm, the chattering of teeth in winter, the lethargy of a hot summer day and other musical descriptions,” says UW Director of Orchestral Activities Michael Griffith. “’The Four Seasons’ is one of the most popular works ever composed, a fitting opening to the UW musical year.”

Vivaldi even wrote sonnets to explain the music, and these will be read at the concert so audiences will enjoy the music even more, Griffith says. In addition, the orchestra will open the concert with the overture to Vivaldi’s opera,” L’Olimpiade.”

Violin soloists will be UW music faculty members John Fadial (autumn and summer) and Sherry Sinift (winter and spring). Griffith will conduct, with faculty members Theresa Bogard playing the harpsichord and Beth Vanderborgh the cello solos. UW Department of Theatre and Dance Assistant Professor John O’Hagan will narrate, and music faculty and selected members of the UW Symphony will make up the small orchestra.
