UW Police Arrest Suspect in Sexual Assault

September 11, 2012 — A tip from a person who’d received an emergency campuswide text message Tuesday led to the arrest of a man suspected of sexual assault.

University of Wyoming Police Chief Michael Samp says Timothy F. Maultsby was arrested by UW police for sexual battery within 10 minutes of a text message sent through the UW Alert system.

The alleged victim, a resident of the UW apartments near 30th Street and Grand Avenue, reported that a person claiming to be selling magazines talked his way into her apartment, and then forcibly touched her in an inappropriate manner.

Shortly after the alleged victim’s report, a description of the suspect and where he was last seen was sent via text message across the campus community. The text message resulted in three calls to the UW Police Department, and one of them led to the suspect’s arrest only two blocks from the alleged victim’s apartment, Samp says.

The Laramie Police Department and Albany County Sheriff’s Office assisted the UWPD in locating the suspect, who is not a UW student and is not from Wyoming, Samp says.

The UW Alert system, one of many safety initiatives in place at UW, provides a means to quickly reach as many members of the university community as possible. More than 13,000 students, or more than 90 percent of the student population, have signed up for the service, as have half of the university's employees.
