UW Rodeo Teams Sit Second in Region

September 25, 2012

Both University of Wyoming rodeo teams are hanging tough in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) after two fall rodeos.

The Cowgirls -- after winning the opening rodeo -- were the runners-up at last weekend’s Chadron (Neb.) State College (CSC) rodeo and are second overall in the regional standings to Northeastern Junior College (Sterling, Colo.).

The UW Cowboys, however, slipped a bit at Chadron, finishing sixth, but maintained their hold on second place in the CRMR behind front-running Gillette College.

Salinas, Calif., senior Lydia Coe moved into second place overall in breakaway roping after winning the event at CSC. She won the opening round and placed second in the short go to take the two-round average with 170 team points.

The remaining 90 points came from Kaycee Nelson, who was fourth in the goat tying average. The Buffalo, S.D., senior was steady through both rounds, placing fourth each time. She is the regional breakaway roping leader.

Another UW Cowgirl, Cassie Hamilton from Chehalis, Wash., was the breakaway roping runner-up to Coe. However, her points didn’t count because she was not designated before the rodeo as one of the four UW women’s team members.

Northeastern Junior College (NJC) moved up the overall standings by scoring 420 points at the CSC rodeo, topping the UW Cowgirls by 160 points. Gillette College placed third with 215 points. Hayden Segelke of NJC won the women’s all-around.

The top three teams in the CRMR after two weeks of competition are NJC with 757.5 points, followed by UW with 670 and Gillette College with 590 points.

Despite the all-around performance from Wyatt Clark, a Wellfleet, Neb., junior, the UW Cowboys slipped from a week ago with their sixth-place finish at CSC. Regional leader Gillette College won the rodeo with 370 points, while NJC was 70 points back of the Pronghorns. Eastern Wyoming College and Casper College split third with 280 points and fifth went to the host Eagles with 275.

The Pronghorns lead the region with 1,135 points, while the Cowboys are second with 895 points. EWC sits third at 670.

Clark combined with teammate Colby Sturgeon, from Torrington, to top the team roping competition by winning the short go. They had the second-best time in the opening round and won the overall average by five full seconds against a Casper College duo. Clark is third in the heeler portion of the team roping competition.

Clark also picked up an additional 50 team points when he split fourth place in saddle bronc riding.

The only other points from the six-man UW squad came from Clayton Van Aken in tie down roping. The Descanso, Calif., junior didn’t place in the tie down average, but managed to score 50 points by recording the second fastest time in the preliminary round. He had a no-time in the short go. He is currently second in the heeler overall standings in team roping. His header partner Tyler Schnaufer, a Pueblo, Colo., senior, also holds the same position.

Sheridan’s Casey Collins, whose points didn’t count in the overall UW team standings, was sixth in the steer wrestling average at Chadron.

Sheridan College hosts the next CRMR rodeo this weekend.
