The University of Wyoming Chamber Orchestra will present a free concert of string orchestra music Sunday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts concert hall.

Directed by James Przygocki, the Chamber Orchestra is made up of top string players from UW. The concert will feature trumpet soloist Scott Meredith, English horn soloist Lindsey Bird Reynolds and student pianist Mei Lian.

The concert will open with a canzona for double string orchestra by the Italian baroque master Giovanni Gabrieli. Next is Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City,” a hauntingly beautiful work composed in 1940. Copland is best known for his iconic American music such as “Appalachian Spring” and “Rodeo.”

The concert concludes with Ernest Bloch’s “Concerto Grosso No. 1 for Strings and Piano Obbligato.” The work was written in 1925 when Bloch directed the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The UW Chamber Orchestra is a select group of 25 outstanding string players. This will be their only concert of the semester.

The UW music department sponsors this event. For more information, call (307) 766-3335.
