UW Alert System Test Successful

October 22, 2012

More than 13,000 University of Wyoming students, faculty and staff members received a text message on their cell phones within minutes after it was sent Wednesday, Oct. 17, in a system-wide test of the university's text notification system, UW Alert.

An email message also was sent to all exchange users. In the event of a real emergency, those signed up for the UW Alert system would have received specific instructions. Also, the majority of digital signs on campus are linked into the UW Alert system so, when an alert is triggered, the signs can display the same message delivered via text to students and employees.

The text alert system (www.uwyo.edu/uwalert), one of many safety initiatives in place at UW, provides a means to quickly reach as many members of the university community as possible. The UW Alert system is tested once a semester to verify that all components of the system continue to operate as expected and the delivery rate of messages remains at a high level.
