UW Veterans Center Plans Military Appreciation Day, Homecoming Football Game Events
Homecoming activities are planned Saturday, Oct. 13, by the University of Wyoming Veterans Services Center, and free flu shots for UW veterans will be offered next week.
The Wyoming Veterans Commission, in partnership with UW Athletics, Laramie’s VFW Post 2221 and the UW Veterans Services Center, sponsor Military Appreciation Day events centered around Homecoming this Saturday.
Events include a pre-game tailgate party hosted by VFW Post 2221 from 2:30-4 p.m. at 2142 Garfield St. The tailgate party is open to all veterans, current military personnel and their families. Complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs will be served.
A special pre-game recognition for veterans is planned before the kickoff of the UW-Air Force football game. All veterans and current military personnel, with a ticket to the game, will meet at War Memorial Stadium’s north end zone at 4:30 p.m. to form a tunnel to greet the Cowboys as they enter the field. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
Participants are urged to wear their favorite veteran/military hat, shirt or jacket. Various recognition and presentations will be made during halftime, including any combat veteran who received ribbons or medals for valor.
“This event is special because we have the opportunity to thank these men and women and their families from all over Wyoming for their dedicated and loyal service to our country,” says Marty Martinez, UW Veterans Services Center’s project coordinator.
Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare applications and free flu shots for all veterans will be offered from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Wyoming Union West Ballroom.
The UW Veterans Services Center hosts the VA Mobile Business Office and VA Director's Whistle Stop Tour. VA representatives will provide facility and service updates.
“We thank the Cheyenne VA Medical Center for its willingness to support and assist our veterans in Albany County and the surrounding area,” Martinez says. “I encourage all veterans to take advantage of the medical services and benefits provided by the VA.”
