United Way of Albany County Meets Historic UW Campaign Goal

January 28, 2013

The United Way of Albany County has reached its 2012 annual campaign goal and its campaign goal for the University for Wyoming.

The overall goal this year is $400,125, and the university goal is $125,000. This was the first year that the goal had been set at or above $400,000 for the overall campaign, and the first time the university goal has been as high as $125,000. To date, the overall campaign topped $408,000, and the university campaign stands at $127,500 (and still counting).

More than 400 university employees donated to the campaign, and the average annual donation is about $315.

“This is an exceptional number,” says Paul Heimer, executive director of the United Way of Albany County. “It is amazing university employees contributed so much at a time when there hasn’t been a raise for a while. Because I am married to a university employee, I understand what staff is going through. So to see such generosity and caring for our community makes me really appreciate the level of donations from UW staff.”

In addition to the generosity of UW staff, a great deal of the credit for the success of the university campaign goes to Mary Burman who, along with her husband, Charlie DeWolf, is the 2012 campaign co-chair, Heimer says. Campus co-chairs are Kim Zafft and Dave Bagley. Along with the entire campus committee, they did a great job in getting the word out about the United Way and helping to increase the size of the campus campaign by at least $4,000.

Even though the United Way has reached its goal, the campaign continues through Jan. 30. In fact, university employees can still sign up for payroll deduction. The payroll deduction form can be downloaded by going to www.unitedwayalbanycounty.org, and then mailing that form to the United Way.

“We really are trying to raise as much money as possible,” Heimer says. “Even with a record-setting campaign, we will not come close to meeting the real needs of our member agencies. Each and every one of them could probably use an additional $10,000-$20,000 to meet the ever increasing human service needs here in Laramie.”
