August 30, 2013 — These are among the construction activities scheduled Sept. 1-7 at the University of Wyoming:

Traffic Alert -- With the start of fall semester classes, the UW Police Department reminds everyone that the speed limit around the perimeter of campus is 20 mph.
No Hot Water -- Domestic hot water service will be shut down to McWhinnie Hall, Wyoming Hall and the Service Building from 9 a.m. Sept. 4 to 4 p.m. Sept. 5 to allow for replacement of steam valves. Building contacts have been notified.
The UW Physical Plant has 289 projects in progress valued at a little more than $22 million. Following is a list of ongoing construction activities in areas of campus that may impact you. Please contact the Service Desk at 766-6225 with questions.
Office Annex -- The air handling unit that supplies air to the west half of the building (both floors) will be off for cooling coil replacement and A/C repairs Sept. 3-6. Building contacts have been notified.
West Campus Electrical Relocation -- Rocky Mountain Power crews will remove old overhead wiring, poles and other equipment on Lewis Street in the area of Ninth to 11th streets. Work is expected to continue through September.
Sigma Phi Epsilon -- Excavation on the north side of the building to locate and repair a leaking steam line will be ongoing. Please use caution around excavation equipment. Tenants have been notified.
Fire Hydrant Testing -- Physical Plant staff and the Laramie Fire Department will continue to test fire hydrants on campus this week. Please use caution around fire hoses near testing areas.
Physical Sciences -- Crews will begin replacing filters in hallway univents throughout the building beginning Sept. 3. Please use caution around ladders and equipment in walkways. Building contacts have been notified.
Arena-Auditorium -- Replacement of damaged corridor skylights on the west side of the building is ongoing. Please use caution in this area.
Law School Parking Lot -- A steam tunnel vault lid is being replaced at the southeast corner of the Law School/Fine Arts parking lot. Barricades will remain through Sept. 13 to allow the concrete time to cure. Please use caution around equipment and construction fencing in this area.
Lewis Street Closure -- Lewis Street, between 10th and 11th streets, will be closed for upcoming construction of the STEM Building. Fencing will be re-constructed in the coming weeks. No parking will be allowed in this area.
General Storage Addition (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Foundation work is ongoing. Access to the south side of the existing building should be only from the west driveway. Utility work will be ongoing in Gibbon Street near the intersection of 15th and Gibbon streets. Signage and barriers will be placed to direct traffic around construction work. Shipping and Receiving operations will continue throughout construction, but alternate access will be designated as utility work progresses. Travelers on Gibbon Street between 15th and 19th streets should use caution around the construction site and construction vehicles, and observe all posted speed limits.
Centennial Complex (American Heritage Center and Art Museum) -- Roof replacement operations continue. Scaffolding on the cone portion of the building will remain in place until November. Roof envelope assembly continues, and glazing of the east side skylights will begin Sept. 3 and 4. A crane will be staged in the north driving lane of the parking lot east of the elevator entry, and vehicular traffic passage will not be possible where the crane is staged. Main entry and elevator access remain open. The main project staging area is on the north side of the building. Use caution in work areas.
Ross Hall Cafe -- Ross Hall Cafe renovations continue. The contractor is completing punch-list items. Use caution in the area. Construction of the facility will be complete soon and furniture will begin arriving in September. Residence Life & Dining Services will schedule the official opening.
Geology Building -- Classroom 216 is ready for classes. Lighting upgrades in the hallway near the classroom will be ongoing. Please use caution around crews and equipment in this area.
Landmark Apartments -- Roof replacement and attic upgrades are complete. Crews will be working on cleanup and punch-list items on all 12 units. Please use caution around equipment, barricaded work zones and fenced staging areas.
River Village Apartments -- Repairs to replace a leaking water heater are complete.
Parking Lot Striping -- Striping operations are complete for the season.
Washakie Center -- Painting of the main offices in the basement is complete.
The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:
White Hall Renovations -- White Hall has reopened as a modern residence hall with new carpet, inviting lounge space, computer labs, study rooms, new furnishings and lights, and new fire suppression systems. Remaining punch-list items will continue over the next few weeks.
Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Fine Arts Building, renovation and expansion, scheduled completion December 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. The parking lot on the east side of the UW Performing Arts Center is closed, is being used for construction staging and will be converted into a green area following construction. Building visitors should use the parking lot on the north side of the building. Those entering the Performing Arts Center must now enter through the doors on the west side of the building. This will be the entrance for all building operations, including classes, ticket purchases and performances, until construction is complete. The east side of the building is a secured construction zone with restricted access. Footing excavation, rebar placement and pouring continues, along with foundation walls. Grade beam exaction and forming have begun. Backfill on the north will begin this week. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent near War Memorial Fieldhouse, 22nd Street and Willett Drive.
Wainwright/Willett Bungalows (Future parking lot, scheduled completion Oct. 4) -- The west entry to the parking lot to the College of Law Building and the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (northwest of Beta House from Willett) is closed to establish a staging area to construct the new Bungalow parking lot. The north entrance from Willett, to the west side of the College of Law Building, remains open and is the only way for vehicles to enter the lot. Concrete curb and gutter will continue through the week. Parking lot road base installation is continuing. Asphalt patching along Willett and the south end of the parking lot is complete.
Biological Sciences Building Mechanical Modifications (Final completion is set for October) -- Building users are encouraged to use the northwest entrance to avoid construction activities. Interior work will continue throughout the week. Work will focus on the third and fourth floors. New HVAC equipment startups are scheduled for Sept. 9.
ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Co. employees and contractors have completed work on lighting retrofits in the Engineering and Agriculture buildings. Control wiring and new VAV box installations in the Agriculture Building are continuing, which will impact building occupants. Workers will wear identifying badges. Work on the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory boiler replacement continues with contractor staging on the west side of the building.
Brown Lot Underground Wiring (22nd and Willett) -- Underground boring and trenching of conduit is complete. Wiring installation has begun. Overhead wiring removal will be scheduled in the next few weeks.
Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center (22nd and Grand, scheduled completion fall 2014) –Installation of overhead (MEP) mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems will begin. Steel framing will be erected for the mechanical penthouse on the south portion of the building. Metal deck will be installed on the third level of the south portion of the building. Installation of exterior metal stud framing will begin on the north portion of the building. Gas service to the building will be installed. Additional project information is available here. Agriculture Buildings A, B & D -- (on Lewis between 12th and 13th streets) will be deconstructed this fall. Asbestos abatement is complete. Parking areas between Ag A and B, and north of Ag A, will be used for staging by the deconstruction contractor. There will be no “A” and “U” parking in these areas. Access to the alley -- along north of the Agriculture Building -- will remain open.
Enzi STEM Facility (Lewis Street between 10th and 11th streets, scheduled completion June 2015) -- Lewis Street remains closed between 10th and 11th streets. The site work has been completed, and bidding/contracting for the main project is in progress.
Golf Practice Facility (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Construction activities for the project have commenced in the vicinity of the Jacoby Golf Course clubhouse. Earthwork activities are underway at the project site adjacent to the practice greens, the driving range tee and the 10th tee. Play at Jacoby Golf Course will be largely unaffected during the initial construction phase. Please observe fenced construction limits and be mindful of additional vehicular traffic accessing the construction site and adjacent areas of the course.
Education Annex Canopy (Scheduled completion October 2013) -- Construction activities continue on the project, including the erection of structural steel canopy framing and related components between the east entrance of the Education Annex and the north entrance of the Education Building, as well as interior renovation of the corridor in the vicinity of the Dean’s Office in the Education Building. Normal access to the Education Building and Ed Annex is open with temporary protections in place. Vehicular access and parking north and east of the Education Building and the Ed Annex have reopened to normal traffic, except that Lab School pick-up and drop-off activities are prohibited in this lot. Ongoing construction activities may require temporary provisions to be put into place with limited notice to accommodate continuing construction. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution in the area.
Education Annex -- Literacy Research Center and Clinic (lower floor, Education Annex; scheduled completion January 2014) -- The lower (first) floor of the Education Annex is closed for construction. Access to the alleyway and portions of related parking east and south of the Agriculture Building is closed, and a temporary access/egress detour has been established west of the Agriculture Building. The pedestrian sidewalk in the Education Annex vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street, with pedestrian access rerouted to the north side of the street at the established construction limits. Parking in the vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street at the construction limits. Project activities include interior framing and rough-in, as well as foundation and site work related to the exterior building addition, structural steel erection, and improvements in the former alleyway. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage.
University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- The primary building enclosure is complete, allowing interior construction activities to proceed on or ahead of schedule. Interior finish construction is progressing throughout UW/CC third- and fourth-floor spaces. Technology and furniture, furnishings and equipment (FF&E) packages will be installed in coming weeks, while pre-completion observations are moving toward final completion and subsequent occupancy of the facility.
Half Acre Gymnasium Addition and Renovation (Scheduled completion spring 2015) -- Full project information is available at www.uwyo.edu/ha-renovation. Half Acre Gymnasium remains open and accessible via the west entrance. The day-lot parking area and roadway immediately east of Half Acre Gymnasium is closed. Temporary day-use parking has been established in the lot east of the Wyoming Union.
Construction work for Phase I, consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the east portion of the existing building, continues this week with deconstruction as the focus. Construction and staging areas north, south and east of the existing building have been established and are closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic, except that which is construction related. Access to Prexy’s Pasture from the east Wyoming Union parking lot between Half Acre and the Wyoming Union is closed until further notice. Please use alternate routes through the Wyoming Union or between the Union and Coe Library. Temporary staging/construction areas also may be established with limited notice near the west entrance and along the pedestrian pathways north of Half Acre Gymnasium between Prexy’s Pasture and Willett Drive as required by the ongoing construction-related tasks.
Significant deconstruction activities are underway toward demolishing the east portion of the existing building. Considerable noise, dust and debris will potentially be created by the activities, although operational precautions are in place to mitigate any impact beyond the immediate construction area. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent on Willett Drive west of 15th Street and along the perimeter of the Wyoming Union parking lot.
