Campus Construction Update for Oct. 13-19


October 11, 2013 — These are among the construction activities scheduled Oct. 13-19 at the University of Wyoming:

Parking Lot Open -- The Wainwright/Willett Bungalows parking lot is open, adding 95 new parking spaces and more on-street parking. Light poles and permanent signage will be complete in the next few weeks. All landscape plantings will be held off until next spring.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Enzi STEM Facility (Lewis Street between 10th and 11th streets, scheduled completion June 2015) -- Lewis Street remains closed between 10th and 11th streets. Please note that this project is being managed and administered by the State Construction Office. The preliminary site work has been completed and bidding for the subcontractors for the building and site development is being coordinated. Contractor mobilization is expected in mid-November, and site work, utilities and foundations will start shortly after mobilization. Utilities for STEM will be done in conjunction with planned north campus utility work.

Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center (22nd and Grand, scheduled completion fall 2014) -- The curtain wall will be installed on the west side of the north portion of the building. Stone masonry will be laid up on the east side of the north portion of the building. Framing and glazing clips will be installed on the east side of the south portion of the building. The roof over the atrium will be installed. Metal framing will be installed for interior walls, soffits and ceilings on the first floor of the north portion of the building. Overhead MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) will be roughed-in at the first floor of the south portion of the building. Construction will begin on the loading dock. Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Fine Arts Building, renovation and expansion, scheduled completion December 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. The parking lot on the east side of the UW Performing Arts Center is closed, is being used for construction staging and will be converted into a green area following construction. Building visitors should use the parking lot on the north side of the building. The large crane has arrived and is in the southeast part of the north parking lot through November. Steel erection will begin this week. Those entering the Performing Arts Center must now enter through the doors on the west side of the building. This will be the entrance for all building operations, including classes, ticket purchases and performances, until construction is complete. The east side of the building is a secured construction zone with restricted access. Footing excavation, rebar placement and pouring continues, along with foundation walls. Grade beam exaction and forming is continuing. Backfill on the north will be complete this week. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent near War Memorial Fieldhouse, 22nd Street and Willett Drive, and along the road west of the College of Law Building.

ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Co. employees will continue working on control wiring and new VAV box programming in the Agriculture Building, which may impact building occupants. Workers will wear identifying badges. Work on the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory boiler replacement is complete.

Brown Lot Underground Wiring (22nd and Willett) -- Project is complete; the remaining poles without fixtures will be removed in the next few weeks by Rocky Mountain Power.

Biological Sciences Building Mechanical Modifications (Final completion is set for October) -- Building users are encouraged to use the northwest entrance to avoid construction activities. Interior work will continue throughout the week. Work will focus on the first, third and fourth floors. New HVAC equipment startups are complete, with remaining tie-ins ongoing. Control wiring and programing is continuing. Filling of the heating water system will continue through the week. The south sidewalk is now open.

Sidewalk Opens -- The sidewalk south of the Biological Sciences Building has been reopened.

Agriculture Buildings A, B and D (on Lewis between 12th and 13th streets) -- Deconstruction has begun on buildings A, B and D and will continue until late November. Parking areas between Ag A and B, and north of Ag A, will be used for staging by the deconstruction contractor. There will be no “A” and “U” parking in these areas. Access to the alley along the north side of the Agriculture Building will remain open. There will be periods that traffic will be restricted in the alley due to demolition along the alley. Access to the fire lane between buildings will be restricted due to truck loading. Parking along the south side of Lewis between 12th and 13th will be used for truck loading. Truck traffic may be heavy at times and will cause congestion around the site.

Golf Practice Facility (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Construction activities for the project have commenced in the vicinity of the Jacoby Golf Course clubhouse. Utility work in support of the project will require temporary and changeable traffic detours of the Jacoby parking lot and adjacent portions of Willett Drive as work progresses. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage. Earthwork and foundation construction are underway at the project site adjacent to the practice greens, the driving range tee and the 10th tee. Play at Jacoby Golf Course will be largely unaffected during the initial construction phase. Please observe fenced construction limits and be mindful of additional vehicular traffic accessing the construction site and adjacent areas of the course.

Education Annex -- Literacy Research Center and Clinic (lower floor, Education Annex; scheduled completion January 2014) -- The lower (first) floor of the Education Annex is closed for construction. Access to the alleyway and portions of related parking east and south of the Agriculture Building is closed, and a temporary access/egress detour has been established west of the Agriculture Building. The pedestrian sidewalk in the Education Annex vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street, with pedestrian access rerouted to the north side of the street at the established construction limits. Parking in the vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street at the construction limits. Project activities include interior finish construction, exterior curtain wall and storefront system erection, foundation and site work related to the exterior building addition, and improvements in the former alleyway. Work on the improvements in the former alleyway will result in increased construction traffic in the form of concrete trucks and other heavy equipment. The construction area is closed to all unauthorized parties. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage.

Education Annex Canopy (Scheduled completion October 2013) -- Construction activities continue on the project between the east entrance of the Education Annex and the north entrance of the Education Building, as well as interior renovation of the corridor in the vicinity of the Dean’s Office in the Education Building. Current construction activities include installation of canopy aluminum and glass ceiling/roof panels. Normal access to the Education Building and Ed Annex is open, with temporary protections in place. Vehicular access and parking -- north and east of the Education Building and the Ed Annex -- have reopened to normal traffic, except that Lab School pick-up and drop-off activities are prohibited in this lot. Ongoing construction activities may require temporary provisions to be put into place with limited notice to accommodate continuing construction. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution in the area.

Half Acre Gymnasium Addition and Renovation (Scheduled completion spring 2015) -- Full project information is available at www.uwyo.edu/ha-renovation. Construction progress can be observed via the project webcam at http://oxblue.com/open/groathouse/gymrenovation. Half Acre Gymnasium remains open and accessible via the west entrance. The day-lot parking area and roadway immediately east of Half Acre Gymnasium is closed. Temporary day-use parking has been established in the lot east of the Wyoming Union.

Construction work for Phase I, consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the east portion of the existing building, continues this week. Construction and staging areas north, south and east of the existing building have been established and are closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic, except that which is construction related. Access to Prexy’s Pasture from the east Wyoming Union parking lot between Half Acre and the Wyoming Union is closed until further notice. Please use alternate routes through the Wyoming Union or between the Union and Coe Library. Temporary staging/construction areas also may be established, with limited notice, near the west entrance and along the pedestrian pathways north of Half Acre Gymnasium between Prexy’s Pasture and Willett Drive as required by the ongoing construction-related tasks.

Deconstruction activities are nearing completion toward demolishing the east portion of the existing building. Considerable noise, dust and debris will potentially be created by the activities, although operational precautions are in place to mitigate any impact beyond the immediate construction area. Subgrade earthwork and foundation construction are beginning, marking the first of the new construction activities required for the east addition. Heavy truck traffic, including cement trucks, earth-moving equipment and other haulers, will be frequent on Willett Drive west of 15th Street and along the perimeter of the Wyoming Union parking lot. Temporary traffic controls and signage are either in place or will be established as needed by specific site activities; please observe all posted traffic control, construction signage and temporary flagging.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- Primary building construction is complete, including throughout UW/CC third- and fourth-floor spaces. Technology and furniture, furnishings and equipment (FF&E) packages will be installed in coming weeks, with primary occupancy of the facility scheduled for winter beak.

The UW Physical Plant has 261 projects in progress valued at more than $21 million. Following is a list of ongoing construction activities in areas of campus that may impact you. Please call the Service Desk at 766-6225 with questions.

Snow Removal -- Physical Plant crews will remove snow as needed throughout the season. Watch for snow removal equipment, be careful and safe during snow events, and call the service desk at 766-6225 to report ice spots and problem areas.

Campus -- Irrigation sprinkler systems are being blown out for the season. Overspray onto sidewalks and driveways could create slippery conditions; please use caution. Maintenance is scheduled to be complete by late October.

Campus -- All the steam systems are turned on and chilled water coils are being drained.

Arena-Auditorium -- Replacement of damaged corridor skylights on the west side of the building will continue as weather permits. Use caution in this area.

Centennial Complex (American Heritage Center and Art Museum) -- Roof replacement operations continue. Scaffolding on the cone portion of the building will remain in place through November. Roof envelope assembly is complete, and metal panel installation and glazing of the east side skylights is ongoing. Main entry and elevator access remains open. The main project staging area is on the north side of the building. Use caution in work areas.

Bureau Of Mines Building -- The air-handling units located in the penthouse that supply air to the building have been shut down to replace the steam heating coils and complete controls work. Units will be down through Oct. 14.

General Storage Addition (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Foundation work is ongoing. The south side of the existing building is accessible from the west driveway. Shipping and Receiving operations will continue throughout construction. Please limit traffic on Gibbon Street between 15th and 19th streets to users of the building only. Always use caution around the construction site and construction vehicles, and observe all posted speed limits.

Landmark Apartments -- Roof replacement and attic upgrades are complete. Verification of all punch-list items is ongoing. Please use caution in work zones.

Ross Hall Cafe -- Ross Hall Cafe renovations continue. Use caution in the area. The contractor is completing punch-list items. Construction of the facility is complete, and furniture will begin arriving soon. Residence Life & Dining Services will schedule the official opening.

Willett Drive -- Replacement of condensate piping will begin Oct. 16 and will be backfilled Oct. 18. The parking area will be available beginning the week of Oct. 21. Please use caution near construction fencing and equipment.

Law School Parking Lot -- Replacement of a steam tunnel vault lid is complete.

Geology Building -- Lighting upgrades throughout the hallways are complete.
