Accident Causes Power Outage on East Side of UW Campus, Community

December 6, 2013

An accident early this morning on Willett Drive knocked down a power line and caused a power outage on the east end of the University of Wyoming campus.  It affected most UW buildings east of 15th Street, including residence halls and the Washakie Dining Center. Additionally, numerous Laramie residents are without power.

Emergency power is in effect and heat is on in the UW residence halls, but no food service will be available at the Washakie Dining Center until power is back on, says Sara Axelson, UW vice president of student affairs. Campus buildings west of 15th Street still have power, and classes and other university activities are proceeding as scheduled.

A dump truck ran into a power pole and knocked down a power line, causing the outage. Rocky Mountain Power crews are on the scene; power is expected to return at approximately 10 a.m., according to UW Campus Police.

“The Central Energy Plant was without power for a time but is now up,” says Jim Scott, UW Physical Plant director.
