UW Nordic Ski Team Organizes ‘Trash 2 Treasure’ Fundraiser
Members of the University of Wyoming’s nationally recognized Nordic ski team will collect unwanted items from students, faculty, staff and community members as part of the annual “Trash 2 Treasure” fundraiser.
The project is sponsored by the team, the Sustainability Club and Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) Office and the Clothing Cottage. During the remaining semester and through the summer, team members will collect and clean donated items for the fundraiser and community project. Collected items will be sold at discounted rates to incoming and returning students in the fall. The sale will be Saturday, Aug. 30, on Fraternity Row.
Possible donated items include furniture, refrigerators, microwaves, lamps, rugs, storage items and pillows. Clothes will be donated to the Clothing Cottage.
The event’s goal is to keep 1,000 pounds of useful items out of the landfill and provide an inexpensive alternative to buying new in the fall, says UW co-head Nordic ski Coach Christi Boggs.
“This is a great way to get rid of any unwanted items without throwing them away and building up our landfill,” Boggs says. “The ski team makes a conscious effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This is a win-win situation for the donors, ski team and buyers.”
The UW Nordic ski team is a student-run RSO (Recognized Student Organization), with Boggs and Rachel Watson serving as volunteer coaches. The money earned will go toward race fees, ski wax, travel, lodging and food expenses throughout the season.
Each year, the ski team raises about $30,000. Boggs says Campus Recreation club sports donates a preset amount, which along with other funds raised, helps pay national dues and entry fees for the year-end United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association championships.
