Thousands of handmade sketchbooks from around the world can be seen at the family-friendly Sketchbook Project Mobile Library Saturday, Aug. 16, from 1-5 p.m. at Laramie’s First Street Plaza.

The project is sponsored by the University of Wyoming Art Museum, Wyoming Arts Council, Albany County School District 1 (ACSD), Laramie Parks and Recreation, and the city of Laramie.

Based in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Sketchbook Project houses more than 30,000 artists’ books contributed by creative people from more than 135 countries. The mobile library is on a tour across North America in a custom-built bookmobile showcasing thousands of handmade sketchbooks.

The interactive mobile exhibition space shares handmade sketchbooks contributed from artists around the world while it stops at more than 20 major cities spanning six months. Each book in the collection is catalogued and searchable by theme, medium, geographic location and unique tags that each artist has created for their book.

The Sketchbook Project provides an outlet for artists to share their stories with the world. From finding a cancer patient’s chronicle of their recovery, a marriage proposal between the bindings, or drawings made by distant friends, the mobile library has allowed for sketchbooks to evolve into a means of connecting with artists in new ways.

The UW Art Museum and ACSD will provide K-12 students with a small sketchbook of their own to keep and fill.

“This fascinating library houses sketchbooks created by artists of all types, from professional to amateur,” says UW Art Museum Curator of Education Wendy Bredehoft. “For this reason, there is something that everyone can relate to, take inspiration from, be challenged by and enjoy.”

For more information, call the Art Museum at (307) 766-6622; visit the website at www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum or follow the museum on Facebook and Instagram.

Through its Museum as Classroom approach, the UW Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages. The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie.  Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.  Admission is free.
