Volunteers are being sought for the annual Laramie Community Service Day on Saturday, Sept. 13.

This annual day of service brings community members together to help beautify and improve Laramie. Sponsors are the Laramie Beautification Committee, the City of Laramie, the Laramie Chamber Business Alliance and the University of Wyoming.

The events will begin with a pancake breakfast for all participants at 7:30 a.m. at the Laramie Recreation Center, 920 Boulder Drive. Volunteers are scheduled to begin working at 8:30 a.m. on two projects: planting of trees and shrubs on north Harney Street between 22nd and 30th streets; and similar landscaping work along Willett Drive and 15th Street by Green Hill Cemetery.

Free parking for the latter project will be available in the university’s Wyoming Union and Wyo Hall parking lots. Participants are encouraged to bring gloves, work boots, shovels, garden rakes and sunscreen.

Work is expected to be completed by 11:30 a.m.

UW President Dick McGinity encourages students, faculty and staff members to participate in the morning of service, which has been an annual event for 13 years. Projects have included gateway beautification, large-scale tree plantings along city entryways, sports field improvements and landscaping of recreation areas. UW joined as a sponsor last year.

“History shows that great things can be accomplished when the university community joins with the larger Laramie community in a united effort,” McGinity says. “This is an opportunity for those of us at the university to show our appreciation for this great place we call home, and to help make it even more appealing.”
