When the first person showed up 30 minutes before the scheduled opening time, Dan McCoy had a feeling there was a lot of interest in the first Bike to UW Day at the University of Wyoming Tuesday.

McCoy, assistant director of Campus Recreation and chair of the Bicycle Pedestrian Safety Committee, says his initial thoughts were confirmed when a large crowd of cyclists showed up at Simpson Plaza a little while later. By 8:45 a.m. the crew had handed out all 250 breakfast burritos. An hour later, all 250 free water bottles had been given away.

Additionally, the Pedal House inspected more than 100 bicycles; more than 20 individuals registered their bikes and received free bike lights from the UW Police Department; and 250 new bicycle maps were distributed.

The event, which took place Sept. 23, was offered to promote and encourage bicycle commuting as a safe, fun and inexpensive alternative to driving, and to promote a website that serves as a one-stop shop for bike-related resources for campus: www.uwyo.edu/bike.

Bike to UW Day was sponsored by the UW Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee, Auxiliary Services, Pedal House, UWPD, UW Recycling and the Outdoor Program.
