The founder of the national Micro/Nano Technology Center will present the University of Wyoming’s annual H.T. Person Homecoming Lecture Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. in Room 129 of the Classroom Building.

Kevin Walsh, the Samuel T. Fife Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Louisville, will discuss “Past, Present, and Future of Nanotechnology.” A reception will follow the lecture at 4 p.m. in Room 1045 of the College of Engineering Building.

The “Star Trek” series made many bold predictions about where mankind would be in the year 2265 regarding such critical areas as communication, health care, transportation and energy.

“In 2014, believe it or not, many of those bold predictions have been realized and, in several cases, surpassed,” Walsh says.

The fascinating field of nanotechnology has allowed that to happen. In this talk, Walsh will provide an interactive history of micro and nano technology, review where we are today, and explore some of the interesting interdisciplinary technologies on the horizon.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) emphasizes that the field of micro/nanotechnology is set to explode from a $382 billion industry in 2010 to an amazing $2.5 trillion industry by the year 2020. The NSF also predicts that 2 million micro/nanotechnologists will be needed by 2020 in the United States alone, compared to only 25,000 in 2000.

The annual H.T. Person Homecoming Lecture brings in distinguished engineering industry leaders to speak. H.T. Person was a professor, the dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and president of UW.
