UW Men Remain In Second Place in Regional Rodeo Standings

Despite a third-place finish at last weekend’s Lamar (Colo.) Community College (LCC) rodeo, the University of Wyoming men’s team remains second in the overall regional standings.

Led by two individual first-place finishes, the Cowboys scored 440 team points at LCC to place third behind front-running Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) and Gillette College. The Lancers won with 560 team points, while the Pronghorns were second with 540.

The Pokes scored 320 points on the first-place finishes from a pair of Cowboys on both sides of the arena.

In the roughstock competition, Brady Dinwoodie, a senior from Canada, had two solid rounds in taking the weekend saddle bronc title. He split the long go, and had his best ride in the short go with 77 points to raise his two-ride total to 144 points to win the average.

After being just average the past two weekends, timed event senior Bret Ellerman of Fort Lupton, Colo., returned to form with partner Trey Yates of EWC to place first in team roping. The pair split the opening round and had the third best time in the short go. Their two-round time of 15.1 seconds was good enough to win the average. Yates earned the men’s all-around at the LCC rodeo.

Ellerman scored 10 more points for the Pokes by having the sixth best time in the opening round of the tie down competition. However, he didn’t record a time in the short go and placed out of the average.

UW junior Tylor Bond, from Avondale, Colo., added an additional 110 team points for the Cowboys when he placed third overall in steer wrestling. He was consistent on two head, timing 5.5 and 5.4 seconds in the long and short go rounds for third place in the average.

For the season, UW’s men trail only perennial Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) champion Gillette College in the race for the team championship. Just the top two regional teams send full six-man clubs to next summer’s College National Finals Rodeo in Casper.

With just this weekend’s Laramie County Community College rodeo left on the fall docket, the Pronghorns have tallied 1,840 points through four events. The Cowboys are the runners-up with 1,665 points, while EWC is third with 1,525 points.

Ellerman and Yates lead the CRMR team roping standings by more than 100 points, while Dinwoodie enjoys the same lead, heading the saddle bronc riding pack.

The UW women’s fall struggles continued when the team failed to get on the scoreboard last weekend for the second time in four fall rodeos.

Defending regional champion Gillette College won the LCC rodeo with 480 team points, while the host Lady Runnin’ Lopes were the runners-up with 230 points. For the season, the Lady Pronghorns lead the CRMR with 1,560 total points, and Northeastern Junior College (Sterling, Colo.) is second with 1,145 points. They are the only two women’s regional teams scoring more than 1,000 points on the year.
