UWs Harkin Leads National Ethnohistory Society

Michael Harkin is the new president of the American Society for Ethnohistory.

Michael Harkin, University of Wyoming Department of Anthropology professor, this week begins his tenure as president of the American Society for Ethnohistory.

Harkin was elected last year by his peers to serve as president-elect and assumes the presidency at the society’s annual meeting Oct. 8-11 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Recognized as one of the nation’s leading anthropologists specializing in the area of ethnohistory, Harkin served from 2007-2013 as co-editor of the organization’s flagship journal, Ethnohistory. He is the author of “The Heiltsuks: Dialogues of Culture and History on the Northwest Coast” (1997) and co-editor of several volumes. He has penned more than 50 journal articles and book chapters.

Additionally, Harkin has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Canadian Embassy and the Wyoming Arts Council. He teaches courses dealing with Native American language and culture, political anthropology, North American Indians and other subjects, and also has taught at Montana State, Emory and Shanghai universities.

The American Society for Ethnohistory serves nearly 600 members representing a variety of disciplines including cultural anthropology, history, Native American studies, archaeology, ecology, linguistics and related disciplines.
