UW Hunger Banquet Demonstrates Food Inequality

Food inequality among socioeconomic levels is exemplified during the University of Wyoming Hunger Banquet Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6-8 p.m. in Washakie Dining Hall Shoshone Room.

Participants are randomly assigned an income level and then fed a meal based on their socioeconomic status. This is an opportunity to experience food inequality firsthand. The event is free, but space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Hunger Banquet allows students to experience poverty, hunger and the class system in a way that is interactive and inspires change and service,” says Hanah Diebold, Residence Life and Dining Services coordinator.

A “Faces Panel” will discuss homelessness during the event. Also, a canned food drive, co-sponsored by Order of Omega, is underway through Friday, Nov. 21. Canned goods can be brought to the Wyoming Union Breezeway table, any of the residence halls or any Greek life house. The food collected will be donated to Laramie organizations and distributed to those in need.
